Garden District

Our tour begins in the heart of the New Orleans Garden District - considered by many to be one of the best-preserved collections of historic mansions in the United States. Originally a family plantation, this area was divided into smaller (but still very large!) lots for private homes with beautiful gardens in the mid-1800’s, giving the district its name. The amazing Antebellum architecture in the Garden District continues to draw the eye, making the area a favorite of locals and visitors alike.

Lafayette

(Pass by)

We will walk pass one of New Orleans’ oldest cemeteries - Lafayette Cemetery. Continually popular with travelers, the cemetery has a unique approach to burials: namely, the above-ground, multiple-burial techniques used.

Commander's Palace

We then continue on for a view of one of the most striking buildings in all of New Orleans: Commander’s Palace. Host to a myriad of wedding receptions and dinners throughout the year, this eye-catching, turreted Victorian building is one of the most well-respected upscale restaurants in the entire country. We’ll admire from the outside unless you want to treat your guide to a meal of a lifetime. Next, we’ll take a stroll, past more gorgeous homes, some with famous Hollywood connections. New Orleans is always a popular filming location for the movie industry and the homes in the Garden District have had starring roles in several films.

This was an excellent walking tour led by Chip. Our engaging guide led a perfectly paced tour exploring Cemetary #1, the Garden District, and the Irish Canal areas. He shared a great mix or architectural and artistic details, local color stories, and amusing asides that brought the neighborhoods to life. He was also took time to answer our “off script” questions which personalized the tour to our interests. Highly recommended!

I have been on a few tours in New Orleans and this one is hands down the best. So many tours are so scripted and over the top where the guide does not know much beyond what they have memorized for their delivery. Chip is truly knowledgeable about New Orleans and really educated me and my friends while bringing a super chill vibe that kept everyones spirits high. The walk was just the right length and Chip was always attentive about keeping us safe while crossing streets and making sure to stop in places where there was plenty of shade for us to rest in. The Garden District is beautiful and so unique, nothing else like it in the US and I consider this tour the best way to see it. Thanks, Chip! 🤠
