Óbidos
Enchanting Óbidos is one of Portugal’s most beautiful destinations and one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval villages or walled towns. Everywhere you turn is a postcard view, and that has inevitably made it one of the country’s most visited sites. But tourism hasn’t ruined its authenticity, with around two thousand people still living in its pretty whitewashed houses with gothic doorways, potted plants and bougainvillea, all inside the crenellated walls of an ancient castle. Many of those people still dedicate their lives to the traditional handicrafts and the famous local drink, Ginja de Óbidos, that our guide will be pleased to offer you for tasting one of the most famous liqueurs in the Country.
Sao Martinho do Porto
We will stop for a couple of pictures in São Martinho do Porto, a friendly village overlooking a famous shell shaped bay with a very narrow entrance from the sea. Because of this the water in the bay is very calm, which makes it ideal for a day at the beach with young children. Although the number of fishermen is decreasing, they still catch fish and shellfish on a daily basis, which is often sold directly to the restaurants at the bay. Across the bay is Salir do Porto. It has a beach with a famous sand dune of almost 49 meters high. The beach is located near the river Tornada that flows into the São Martinho bay.
Foz do Arelho
Another stop for a couple of pictures in Foz do Arelho, one of the most beautiful places on the Silver Coast of Portugal. Located on the coast of Caldas da Rainha municipality, this traditional seafront village, nestled between Óbidos lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, is a famous beach destination that is also very popular amongst anyone who loves nature! Throughout the centuries, Óbidos Lagoon underwent changes in its location. According to ancient records, in the past the lagoon is believed to have reached the hills of the medieval village of Óbidos, hence the origin of its name.
Ericeira
Last, before getting back to Lisbon, our tour guide will have a few "treats" for you in Ericeira, a typical Portuguese fishing village on the Atlantic Ocean, that is now rapidly becoming the surfing hotspot of Portugal. Ericeira is the only World Surfing Reserve in Europe. Since 2011 the beautiful coastline is officially protected as a surfing reserve. This status, together with the ‘old world charm’ of the town, makes Ericeira a perfect holiday destination for lovers of the Portuguese culture, seafood and good waves.
