Mary Kathleen

Originally discovered in 1954 by Norm McConachy and Clem Walton, the Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine and Township were officially opened by Robert Menzies, Prime Minister of Australia and Frank Nicklin, Premier of Queensland in October 1958. In its heyday, the township had a population of 1,000 people and was situated 6 km from the working mine. The township had all the essentials that a population of that size needed - a post office, school, cinema, banks, hospital, supermarkets, swimming pool, sports grounds orchards and more. The uranium in Mary Kathleen mine was exhausted by 1981 and it was subsequently closed. Today we can still see the concrete slabs where the original buildings stood, remnants of the town’s layout and the mine itself. And if we listen carefully we may hear the distant voices of the residents as they weave through the trees on the breeze.

We had a great tour with Phil today he was brilliant. We learnt so much about the Mount Isa area and the mine! Really brought the ‘ghost town’ alive very knowledgeable guy ! We also enjoyed the afternoon tea and a chat with him comparing life in England and Australia, not too much difference as we discovered! Thankyou for all the goodies! We had crossed a visit to Old Mary Kathleen off of our list because of having a motorhome. However, North West Tours came up trumps with a organised tour. Not only did they pick-up from our accomodation, they ran our tour even though there were only the two of us booked for thr trip. Our guide and driver was a really good guy and I'm ashamed to say I cannot remember his name. However, after showing us an informative video he drove us around the remains of Mary Kathleen town pointing out the key points. After a brief stop at the town centre to take some photo's we headed along to the Mine site along the track that we could never had risked driving the motorhome. The sheer scope of the mining operation was immense and the tranquilly of the mine "lake" was beautiful. We were in awe of this, as was our guide who had seen it so many time before us. After taking numerous photo's we retreated from the site as the sight of foolhardy visitors taking risks at the lake edge. We set off to a rest area for some coffee and cakes, and a good old chin wag, before heading back to our accomodation. An added bonus was to see a small herd of camels sharing space with some cattle as we were driven back. So Thank You NORTH WEST TOURS for arranging the Old Kathleen Mine Tour. And thanks once again to our guide.

Well worth the cost! Small group, lots of information (including a really historic video) and plenty of time to view both the town site and the mine. Afternoon tea was relaxed and well catered. Philip was an excellent communicator and Dreiser.

Phil our tour guide was an excellent host. You watch a video on the way out about the community that lived in Mary Kathleen many many years ago which is interesting as afterwards you’ll get to visit the town in its current state. You then visit the open cut uranium mine which is spectacular! Followed by a delicious afternoon of tea, coffee and cakes. Tour states 4 hrs but we were 5, no complaints tho as it was informative and a relaxing evening spent. Out of 3 tours I did. All were over time (all different companies) so it’s a little more laid back here if the numbers in the tour are bigger.

Such an interesting tour. Watching the video beforehand was good preparation as it is hard to lmagine a town when so little remains. The scenery at the former pit is stunning. The wattle was in bloom and was a beautiful contrast to the vivid red rocks. Smoko at Fountain Springs rest area was welcome- a nice selection of biccies and cake on offer. Our guide Phillip was very informative and he ensured we were comfortable. The roads on the site are quite rough so be aware. The walk up to the viewing area is not arduous. Mary Kathleen has a unique history well worth investigating. I recommend this trip as part of getting to know the Mt Isa area.

Absolutely great afternoon. Our driver, Bob was full of great and interesting information and no question was too difficult. The tour of the original town site was great as well as a little bush bashing to get to the mine itself. It's an awesome sight to see the mine and it's surroundings. We had people from Switzerland & Austria (where there are NO Kangaroos' !!!) and they were lucky enough to see some wildlife up close thanks to Bob stopping on request. Afternoon tea followed then a drive back to Mt Isa. Recommend the tour.... ABSOLUTELY.

The guide picked me up in time and we were a small group of 5. Approx. 1 hour drive from Mount Isa to go to the abbandoned village of Mary Kathleen and the mine. Then teatime with snacks before driving home. The view on the mine and the lake there was amazing, the village was disappointing because there could only be seen some remaining stone floors. All buildings were sold and are gone. Today it is obviously used as wild camping ground The drivers slang was realy hard to understand for me. I guess my linguistic proficiency is average....not every tourist (I am from Austria) is a native speaker.....guides should at least try to speak slowlier and clearer, maybe some Oxford englisch....especially when they notice that foreigners are onboard
