Sao Sebastiao Viewpoint (mirador)

We leave towards the West of the Island already starting to use the paths that have been cut through the mountains from CampanĂ¡rio. there we will be able to observe the work done by our ancestors in the execution of one of the world heritage sites nominated by UNESCO, I am talking about the famous terraces of Madeira Island. This type of ancestral construction is nothing more than the construction of stone walls of volcanic origin to add to the cultivation area on the slopes of the island. After observing these constructions we will make a brief stop at the SĂ£o SebastiĂ£o belvedere situated 170 metres above sea level and where there is an ideal point to observe the only valley in Madeira Island that cuts through it from north to south.

Cais da Ponta do Sol

We leave towards the village of Ponta do Sol leaving the tunnel that gives access to the village, inside a pond existing in the roundabout we can observe a statue of modern traces that pays homage to the famous terraces of Madeira Island and we can observe that the main cultivation existing in the terraces is the famous Madeira banana tree. We will make a shortstop, where it is possible to visit a small Roman arch bridge made with basalt stone, an ideal place for photographs over the bay.

Cascata dos Anjos

After the stop in Ponta do Sol, we use the old regional road where we can observe how the old tunnels of Madeira Island used to be, they were dug by hand and opened with explosives. We can contemplate from the panoramic roof of our UMM the Basalt dome without any coating. Between the tunnels, we can also observe the old Royal Road nº23. We then stop at the famous Cascata dos Anjos, famous on social networks for its spectacular photos.

Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse

Continuing our tour we head towards Ponta do Pargo. The westernmost point of Madeira Island. Inaugurated in 1922, the lighthouse is situated on the westernmost point of the island, standing on a cliff at an altitude of 290 meters. Erected on Ponta da Vigia, 290 meters above sea level, Ponta do Pargo lighthouse started operating on June 5th, 1922, and dominates the cliff top. The tower is 14 meters high and its focus is at an altitude of 312 meters.

Achadas da Cruz

Following the old regional road, we will arrive at a small village situated in the division between north and south, where we can see a small cable car that gives access to a fajĂ£ at sea level, where agriculture is still practised and also vineyards that with the microclimate existing in the place produces excellent wine.
