What to expect
On Original Riverfront Walking Tour in Savannah based on the book, History’s Way: Along Savannah’s Riverfront, by historian and author JD. Following River Street and the bluff section it relives the Revolutionary and Civil Wars battles and conflicts along Savannah’s waterfront . Our knowledgeable historians will entertain you with tales of historic pirate clashes, street vendors’ shouts from long past and Savannah’s unique version of a “Tea Party.” You’ll see the archaeological and geological features of the area as you walk along the historic cobblestones of River Street amid the sweet aroma of saltwater taffy and Southern pralines. (Leashed pets are welcome.)
They came to the Old Fort District from across Ireland and settled in the neighborhood that is rich in Revolutionary War history among the African-American people. Walk with our historians through the old squares where those who came to work and have a better life settled in the mid-1800s. You’ll hear the stories of immigrants like William Kehoe, Michael Cash, James Monahan, and other Irish families who made their way to Savannah to find the American Dream. (Leashed pets are welcome.)
Join us and discover how the concept of “progress” in the 20th century drastically changed the culture of Savannah and led to a movement to preserve its rich history and architecture. As you stroll through the lush, live-oak-covered squares, you’ll walk in the footsteps of important figures such as President George Washington, Union General William T. Sherman, and colony founder James Oglethorpe. You’ll be transported back in time as you listen to the stories of the first settlers, the antics of Georgia’s first known party-goer, and the tragic hardships he and the others faced during the early days of the colony. (Leashed pets are welcome.)
