Tsarevets

Dating to the 12th century, this strategic fortress is one of two highly fortified hills (Trapezitza being the other) that protected Bulgarian rulers living on the site in the tsar’s palace. Explore the historical monument and enjoy the city views from the front steps. Tsarevets Museum is located on Tsarevets Hill, which has been settled since time immemorial due to its strategic location. Thracians and Romans has used the location for defensive reasons, however, Byzantines built the first fortress here between the 5th and 7th centuries AD. The fortress was rebuilt and fortified by the Slavs and Bulgars between the 8th and 10th centuries, and again by the Byzantines in the early 12th century. When Tarnovgrad became the Second Bulgarian Empire’s capital, the fortress was truly magnificent, but with the Turkish invasion in 1393, it was sacked and destroyed.

Part of an excursion while sailing on the Danube. It was a scorching hot day 41° so the climb was arduous, our guide was very good pointing out all the interesting sites. The castle at the top was a sight to behold, with the inside walls covered with murals depicting the communist era. Well worth a visit if you are in this part of the world.

We are happy that we chose this product among others. Super insightful guides notes as if you have a real, physical guide with you. Very happy with this and it's so cheap.

Disappointing. The information provided was like it was copied out of book. More historical information than a walking guide to the fortress. I found the signage on the grounds and audio from speakers more helpful than this guide.

I visited the fortress after a few days in Veliko Tarnovo, and it is one of the most interesting historical sites I have visited in Bulgaria, it was the main fortress and stronghold during the second Bulgarian Empire, the paintings inside the main church are quite interesting, also there is a light and sound show which is sporadically organized and if you happen to be in Veliko you definitely must watch it, very very cool! This is one attraction you cannot miss if you visit Veliko Tarnovo!

There was lots of road construction at the entrance, so we needed to walk quite a way to visit the fort. I’m so glad we did. The grounds were full of historical and ancient ruins, there is so much to see. The grounds were well maintained. It was not crowded at all the day we visited. There are bathrooms on site free of charge. The paths are cobblestone so I am not sure how strollers or wheelchairs would roll comfortably. Be sure to walk to the far left corner of the fort to see where the executions were conducted. Very interesting story but I won’t ruin it for you.

It's a pretty site, but not much else to see, apart from the church which has magnificent paintings on its walls. The e-guide paid for and received gives very little explanation about the site itself. Too expensive for what it is !
