The Emigration Museum BallinStadt Hamburg focuses on emigration via Hamburg (1850 1934) and the development of migration over four epochs at a historic location. Always accompanied by human longings, fates and stories. The The reasons for migration are still timeless. Escape from war, hunger and persecution or just simply a thirst for adventure, curiosity and the dream of a new (better) life were motivation for emigration then and now and thus also immigration.

Well laid out museum, full of lots to look at and to read. Tons to learn about the emigration from eastern Europe, through this site in Hamburg, to the U.S. As a Jew and son of an immigrant from eastern Europe, I found the Jewish angles fascinating: the Jewish director of the shipping company (Mr. Ballin), as well as the large percentage of the immigrants who were Jewish. Highly recommended!

It is wonderful that this emigration station has been preserved and houses related exhibits. Like other emigration museums, this one provides the historical context of emigration/migration as a normal human phenomenon. However, I would like to have seen more context about earlier periods of travel from the port of Hamburg and not just that limited to this station. I would also have appreciated some kind of orientation to where the older stations stood on the river. While I appreciate the museum's attempt to provide an audio guide, I have to say that it provided limited help. Germany is visited by many international visitors and in keeping with that fact, the museum should embark on a plan to meet the needs of these patrons as well as the local community and provide full translations of all exhibits. I am giving the museum a rating of "3" but would have gladly given a higher rating had I been able to access the exhibits more fully.

If you don´t read German fluently DON¨T GO. No proper cover in other languages which for an Emigration museum seems ironic. To call it an Emigration Museum is overstating what is on display as 90% of museum is dedicated to covering Hamburg to Ellis Island route. Maybe Hamburg-USA emigration museum? I tried to leave my comments at reception/ visitor´s book but was asked to write a Google review. Good Museum in some ways but very disappointing in others. Overpriced.

More testimonies and interfaces in English or in bilingual format would have been nice. Great collection that is worth a visit nevertheless. Easily accessible and a bargain price. Welcoming and pleasant facilities. Competent staff.

Nice visit to this museum (first time) and lovely friendly lady of Welsh origin at the front desk. I should have come prepared with mobile device to listen to the English audio or there should have been audios available as practically all of the information is in German, which was a shame. Also a large group of school kids there when I arrived so not always possible to view some elements in peace though they were very well behaved. Really interesting collection of artifacts. Friendly staff in the restaurant next door.

Eventing is in German. Only some audio things are in english. Which seems very ignorant for a museum on migration. Very disappointed. If you don’t speak german it is not worth the effort nor money.

Very interesting Museum, Richelieu documented and covering the emigration topic in depth. Good iconography, interesting museography. A booklet in English is available but the exhibition itself is 98% in German. Ticket unfortunately a bit too expensive. Still, well worth a visit.

Descendants of emigrants, particularly ones that left Germany for America, would be remiss if they visited Hamburg without checking out this museum. Particularly nice is the opportunity they give to use ancestry.com connection to search family records. This museum did not have English translations available everywhere. Nevertheless, there was enough, and with some working German, you shouldn't have problems. It is a bit of a hike walking from the city center, so it is advisable to take public transit to get there.

A very informative exhibition about BallinStadt itself and the topic of emigration in general. Attractively designed and with the right balance of background information and illustrations.

Actually an exciting topic in an exciting location, namely the original buildings of the former emigrant house. Unfortunately, the staff are very bored and the exhibition is very poorly prepared. The audio guide is spoken in machine language and simply repeats what you can read on the display boards. If you have the opportunity, visit the emigrant house in Bremerhaven instead! A much more exciting and interesting house!
