Peniche
Peniche and Berlengas are located in the so-called Costa Oeste (West Coast), an area of debatable definition located on the coast north of Lisbon. It is an area deeply marked by the Atlantic Ocean, with beautiful beaches and a very dynamic agricultural and fishing activity.
It takes about 1.5H from Lisbon to Peniche, but it will be a nice journey with Portugal's history of that area.

Berlenga was amazing! Sights were amazing, and your guides on the boat-island were good. But what made the experience most memorable was our driver Fernando. The amount knowledge that he had was unparalleled. Very personable, professional, and made us felt like family.

Everything about this day was great! Our initial driver Fernando gave great recommendations of restaurants to try, very friendly and gave history of regions we drove through. The actual tour on boat and Berlenga Island was nice too. Friendly and cave tours were great. A little too cold to snorkel today for us but hikes were beautiful! You can even stay on the island in castle! Great food at cafe on the island and worth a trip!

The island tour companies are not well organized and confusing to work with. Keep telling you that you will get more direction at the Island but they just kind of shuffle you around without explanation. Only the drive is the private aspect of the tour. The island is beautiful and the tour companies probably don't really have to compete much for your business.

What a great experience! This was actually my favorite day of our trip. Berlenga was unbelievable and really should not be missed. Our guid/driver picked us up at our hotel, he was on time and was so friendly and accommodating. He was full of great local information and said he was ours for the day. He was not kidding!! It was about an hour drive to catch the ferry to the island, we were given tickets for everything we needed for the island excursion (all taken care of by driver). We spent nearly 4 hours exploring Berlenga which was amazing! After the ferry boat back, our driver was waiting for us, and we had wanted to see a city called Nazare and had asked if we could go, he said absolutely. We jumped into our vehicle and we’re off!! Nazare shouldn’t be missed, incredible story! I am fascinated with this place. This is where our guide shined, he knew exactly where to take us and I will be forever grateful!! We spent nearly 2 hours there which doesn’t sound like a lot but we got to see exactly what we wanted to see! But wait there is more…..After Nazare he said we’re 2 how about Obidos, We said absolutely and we’re off to another magical city! Obidos was spectacular!! We were so glad to have been able to see it as it really should not be missed!
After we finished Obidos we were driven back to our hotel, where we thanked our driver for an incredible experience. Although it wasn’t mandatory we tipped our new friend ( I hope it was enough) and concluded the best day of vacation in my entire life!!
I also want to add that this was not our only experience with this travel company, the day earlier we had booked another day trip to Sintra and had exactly the same experience. This company understands what we tourist want they deliver excellent service and deliver an unforgettable experience. Thank you again for giving us such an incredible vacation!

This was an amazing tour such a beautiful area to visit. Orlando picked us up from our accommodation and took us to Peniche where we were able to get some lunch for the island which was yummy. Trip over was good. Time on island was great doing Cave boat tour is a must. We organised for a guide on the island thinking it was for the fortress but it was for the huge walk from fortress up the top of the island and back down to the harbour. I couldn’t do that as I have a lung issue so we went back to harbour and had our lunch in peace and quiet before the others got back. It was a beautiful day and not to be missed.

We purchased tickets to a private tour of Berlenga Island. The car taking us to the marina to board the boat was private. We arrived at the marina and were told to board a ferry boat with at least 150 other passengers. The crew were disorganized and safety issues surrounded the maintenance on the boat. Only one restaurant on the island. There was no swimming in the Atlantic unless you count the small beach on the island. Totally dissapointing. Would not recommend this excursion to others particularly in light of the fact that we could have taken an Uber to the marina and purchased a round trip ferry ticket for $15 Euros. Overpaid for the excursion by $400 to $500 Euros.

The island is wonderful, and the cave tour is worthwhile.
Just be prepared for a lot of walking on steep paths.
The water is cold, so if you plan to swim, be warned. It tends to be cool and cloudy up until around 2pm most days in late summer, then the clouds clear, but by then the boats return to Peniche.
I paid full price for two people, but my partner was unwell, on the day, so I had to go solo. Viator would only give a "partial" refund (less than 10% of the ticket price). Very insulting. Capitalism on steroids.
Be aware that you could do this trip far cheaper by taking a train from Lisbon to Peniche (about 3 Euro), then buying a ferry ticket (about 30 Euro) and a Cave tour ticket (about 6 Euro). You live and learn.

We had the absolute best tour guide Mr Riu; friendly, knowledgeable, accommodating, courteous, and genuinely nice. The island was magnificent! Beautiful sites including rock formations, caves, fort, lighthouse, elevated vistas, turquoise sea water, etc. Swimming was awesome. Trekking the hills was somewhat challenging, and would only recommend for people who are at least moderately physically fit. I have a very arthritic hip and the uneven, steep inclines were fairly difficult…but well worth it!!

We had a private driver who picked us from the hotel and brought us to the boat. He was extremely caring and friendly. On the way back he showed us two more cities. On the boat the crew was exceptionally caring and professional. The same guys were running the caving tour on the island. Great job.
Totally awesome experience. Strongly recommend.

Mr. Rui from Swingo tours was wonderful - he drove us to and from Peniche to get the boat to Berlanga Island. After our island tour, he took us for a lovely driving tour of the vistas in Peniche, and the town of Obidos (sp?) which is touristy but beautiful. Mr. Rui was knowledgeable and friendly.
The company that took us from the dock in Peniche to Berlenga Island was Live Berlenga (Mr. Rui stayed on shore). They were very nice, but disorganized and mis-advertised some things. One surprise is that the boat we took was not the ferry catamaran in the Viator pictures, but a small pontoon jet boat like the US Coast Guard use --- very fast and lots of wave jumping (we got air). My teen boys really loved it, my wife was terrified. Another surprise is that they told us we would have time to do the cave tour and snorkeling and explore the island by foot, where in reality we had no time to explore the island by foot and our snorkeling was only 30 minutes in a less desirable location. You get only 3 hours on the island on this tour.
This trip is more about relaxing than adventure. Pick 2 things you want to do, not three, or find another option that has a longer time on shore.
