Heidelberg

Heidelberg is only one of many possible destinations, but in case of a tour with "a friend in Heidelberg" almost a must. Heidelberg is my hometown and I not only know the city like the back of my hand but also its vicinity. The Heidelberg Castle and the world-famous historic old town are a must see. However, off the beaten track there is much more to discover.

Schwetzingen Palace

The Schwetzingen Palace is one of many possible destinations of our journey. Worth seeing is the 18th century castle garden.

Speyer Cathedral

The Speyer Cathedral, one of many possible destinations of our journey, is the largest surviving Romanesque church in the world. Four emperors, three empresses and kings from the houses of Habsburg, Staufen and Nassau are buried here. The cathedral is thus the most important burial site of the Middle Ages on German soil.

Schloss Hirschhorn

Hirschhorn, one of many possible destinations of our journey, is also called the pearl of the Neckar valley. In the summer of 1878 Mark Twain visited Hirschhorn and dedicated a chapter in his book "A Tramp Abroad" to the city. Among the sights of Hirschhorn are the medieval castle as well as the historic old town with its numerous old half-timbered houses. On our way back we will stop to see the ruined castle of Dilsberg which is not only a marvel of medieval architecture but one also known for a stunning view of the Neckar river valley.

Altstadt Heppenheim

The old town of Heppenheim, one of many possible destinations of our journey, is characterized by old half-timbered houses and offers a picturesque old town center, a location which in recent years has established itself as a popular movie backdrop for the Bollywood film industry. The 11th century castle of Starkenburg on the mountain opposite the old town is not only worth seeing but also worth a visit.

Kloster Lorsch

The Abbey of Lorsch, one of many possible destinations of our journey, is one of the most famous abbeys of the Carolingian Empire. Even in its ruined state, its remains are among the most important pre-Romanesque-Carolingian style buildings in Germany and is a fundamental example for early medieval German history. In 1991 the ruined abbey was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Admission Not Included

Worms

The city of Worms, one of many possible destinations of our journey, the home of Kriemhild, Siegfried, Hagen, and the other famous characters of the 13th century poem The Nibelungenlied! You will visit the Cathedral St. Peter where Queen Kriemhild and Queen Brunhilde quarreled over Siegfried the dragon slayer and where there is a statue of Hagen von Tronje throwing the treasure of the Nibelungen into the Rhine River.

Strasbourg

Strasbourg, one of many possible destinations of our journey, has a well-preserved historical old town, classified a World Heritage Site since 1988. The famous sandstone gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame with its famous astronomical clock is the city's landmark. In the streets and squares surrounding the cathedral you will find a medieval cityscape of Rhineland black and white timber-framed buildings. Another landmark worth visiting is the district of La Petite France with its canals and narrow alleys.

Jagsthausen

Jagsthausen, one of many possible destinations of our journey, was already settled by the Romans in 160 AD. The Götzenburg and the White Castle offer the perfect backdrop for a rest on the way to Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg, one of many possible destinations of our journey, is a world-famous tourist attraction with a largely preserved medieval old town. The historic town center is surrounded by a impressive town fortification and embedded in the largely unobstructed landscape of the Tauber river valley.

Mercedes-Benz Museum

The Mercedes-Benz Museum, just one of many possible destinations of our journey. The website describes absolutely aptly what the visitor can expect: The museum relates its history and tells its stories, bringing both alive by placing them in the context of technology, day-to-day life, social history and popular culture. More than 160 vehicles of all types are the main protagonists. They range from some of the oldest automobiles ever built to legendary racing cars and futuristic research vehicles. Together with other exhibits, they form the centerpiece of the permanent exhibition covering a total of 16,500 square meters in twelve rooms. This unparalleled world can be discovered on two tours that follow a “Legend” and “Collection” narrative.

Don't second-guess yourself .... reserve your time with Manfred NOW. You will thank yourself later! My husband and I arrived in Heidelberg the day prior to our time with him and had seen/done the typical tourist recommended activities. The following morning Manfred picked us up at our hotel and took us outside of Heidelberg to a little village called Dilsberg. It was a beautiful, quiet spot where we had the opportunity to walk through the castle and grounds. We then traveled to Neckarsteinach (crossing the river by way of ferry) where we sat together, had a cappuccino and chatted. As we only had a few hours to spend with Manfred, we then headed back to Heidelberg. However, that was not the end of Manfred's graciousness. He recommended a place in his neighborhood for lunch (Hugos) and later sent us( via email) details of a scenic route we could take to get to Miltenberg where our niece would be getting married a few days later. Manfred's van is impeccably clean and comfortable. More importantly is Manfred, himself. He is a very friendly, helpful and gracious man. He is very generous with sharing his time and information. Manfred made it a top priority to get to know us and learn about our lives. The time we had with Manfred was a highlight of our time in Germany. We feel blessed to have met him and spent time with him.

On our trip to Germany, my husband and I wanted to include a visit to our childhood homes, as both our father’s were stationed (US Army) in Germany in the 1960’s. Manfred successfully located and took my husband to the former US Army base in Heidelberg, where base housing he lived in was still there, having been converted to university student housing. My husband was thrilled. I unfortunately, could not locate the house my family lived in, in Bibergau. We had a delightful time with Manfred in Heidelburg and my husband wrote him a great review. I however, was disappointed, not in our tour, just because I looked forward to returning to Bibergau for many years, only to fail in locating my family’s former residence. My husband asked Manfred if he could be of any help in researching what had become of the house, and the people who rented it to my father. Keep in mind, Bibergau is 180 km from Heidelberg. Nevertheless, Manfred agreed. Upon our return to the US, Manfred reported he had found the address of the home, including a Google street scene, as well as, what had become of the property owners. They were such sweet people and so nice to us as children, me and my siblings wondered what had become of them. While the property had changed over the decades, I could see characteristics I remembered as a child. We used to play in the orchard across the street, and clearly there are still fruit trees there today. My siblings were thrilled with this update. I am so thankful for Manfred and his “above and beyond” efforts to help me. Manfred is more than a friend in Heidelberg, he’s a wonderful person who will always be your friend, wherever that might be

Our trip with Manfred was one of the highlights of our Rhine River cruise. He communicated prior to the trip and worked with the ship’s changing schedule to make sure we returned to the dock on time. Manfred is very easy to talk to and very knowledgeable about Heidelberg. Great experience which I highly recommend!

This was one of our best excursions on our European trip! Manfred was amazing and was so knowledgeable about Heidelberg. He not only took us to all of the places we wanted to see, he also suggested other places that he knew we would enjoy. We went to a local cafe for lunch and the entire day was great! Manfred has a very luxurious van that is very comfortable. We highly recommend A Friend in Heidelberg for a personal tour!

Manfred was a wonderful tour guide! He truly is our new friend in Heidelberg and I would recommend him to anybody. His van is also super cool! He came up with perfect suggestions in a very natural way, we never felt rushed, and our family had a great time talking with him. Manfred has a lot of town pride and is knowledgeable about everything in the area - and if we had questions he hadn’t encountered before, he was quick to find out! He was also very good at navigating, driving, and scheduling. And also a great photographer! Thank you, our new friend in Heidelberg - we will absolutely contact you next time we are in the area! We had a delightful time on the Heidelberg tour. Manfred goes to considerable lengths to create a personal, individualized experience. My return to Heidelberg was two fold, see Heidelberg but also return to the base housing where I lived as a child. Manfred grew up near the base housing. He provided great insight in what has transpired over the last sixty years. 29-D Holbeinring was still there after all these years. A bucket list item to visit. As a children, we loved German brotchen and thought it was a specific bread, not understanding the term is generic in nature (small rolls). Manfred found humor in this and took us to a local bakery to see the difference. We sample brotchen and some cookies. Wonderful! Manfred is a plethora of history and information, at times, stopping on the side of the road to point out things and provide insight. Heidelberg is a beautiful city and we saw it all. Manfred introduced us to a German wine expert at the Heidelberg castle. Very interesting and of course we had to try the wine. Outstanding. Take the tour. You’ll get an insiders view of the city and Manfred will take great care of you.

We just had a wonderful day in Speyer and Heidelberg with Manfred! We are celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary on a Rhine River cruise. When the water of the Rhine got too high, we had to do a ship swap, which meant we would miss Speyer where we had arranged for Manfred to pick us up. We were so disappointed! Never to worry! Manfred arranged to pick us up at a rest stop along the highway where access on and off was easy for the bus taking us to our new ship. He was there 15 minutes early so we didn't have to wait! The bus made a 3 minute stop to let us off and we were all on our way! We had a wonderful stop in Speyer seeing the cathedral and some of the downtown. Then it was on to Heidelberg where Manfred gave us a lovely tour of the city, before taking us the the Castle- the highlight of the day! An amazing structure with amazing history! Manfred was our tour guide and local enthusiast! He knows a lot of history! After the castle we walked to an authentic German restaurant for schnitzel (our choice of food!). The food was delicious and the restaurant was filled with authentic atmosphere! We spent time walking around old Heidelberg and and enjoyed some gelato. It was a perfect day and we were so grateful not to miss this part of our tour! Manfred then returned us to our ship in Strasbourg. His flexibility made it all possible, and his good humor, warmth and stories made it all fun! We would definitely recommend Manfred for all your touring needs in this area!

Wonderful experience. We love visiting with local personal guides. We were treated to a specialized individual visit with stories, history but best of all local flavor. It's like visiting a friend when someone can recommend the best Gelato and it actually is the best! Manfred was kind and accommodating and always asked and reset his pace to fit our needs and interest. Highly recommend and most appreciated his time.

Manfred picked us up from our hotel and took us on a tour of the Heidelberg Castle and other must-see spots in Heidelberg. He is a fun and knowledgable tour guide. Very flexible, he can adjust your time with him either extending it or cutting it short because you're still jet lagged. He is a fun, kind, and knowledgeable man.
