Your Itinerary

Moulin Rouge

a Cabaret popular among the Impressionists such as Toulouse Lautrec and others within the Post-Impressionist Movement incuding Van Gogh, Gaugin and Cezanne

Rue Lepic

Continuing on the Rue Lepic we will see the Moulin de la Galette, an open-air dance hall painted by Renoir.

Le Bateau-Lavoir

Passing by the Bateau Lavoir we climb to the Musee’ de Montmartre. Formerly a ballroom and piano factory, Bateau Lavoir was squatted and divided into twenty small workshops in 1889. Distributed along a corridor, small rooms were linked without heating and with a single point of water. [1]The name "Le Bateau-Lavoir" was coined by French poet Max Jacob. The building was dark and dirty, almost seeming to be scrap pile rather than a dwelling. On stormy days, it swayed and creaked, reminding people of washing-boats on the Seine River, hence the name. Au Lapin Agile

We will stop for an aperitif in a café near the Lapin Agile, a cabaret made famous in Picasso’s painting “Au Lapin Agile” where most of the artists spent many evenings drinking and socialising.

Musee de Montmartre

This evocative Museum recaptures the feeling of those past Bohemian days with its old posters, paintings, photos and recreation of period rooms. The building that now houses the Museum was rented at various times by Renoir, Dufy, Suzanne Valadon and her alcoholic son Utrillo. Here one can see the tiny Montmartre Vineyard. We will visit the renovated atelier of Suzanne Valadon, Manet’s pupil, which gives us further insight into the life and passions of the Impressionists who lived in this area.

Montmartre

At the end of this Tour you can either remain in Montmartre and enjoy lunch in one of the Restaurants or descend the 270 steps to take a taxi or the Metro at Anvers Station. Alternatively, you can take the Funicular and if you let us know, the guide can purchase the tickets in advance.

Basilique du Sacre-Coeur de Montmartre

We then visit the Sacre Coeur Cathedral whose iconic dome is higher than the Eiffel Tour. From its Esplanade Paris stretches before your eyes, vibrant and still pervaded by the joie de vivre for which it is famous.
