The concept was cool but the execution and overall experience was poor. Based on other reviews, there seems to be a pattern in which Ofri overbooks the classes and crams people into her home kitchen. We were expecting a group of 10…there were 6 chairs in front of the island yet there were 17 of us in the class. She was overwhelmed, unwelcoming and distant. And we believe this was due to her being stretched thin. The food was horrible. I wish there was another word I could use but it’s the truth- it was bad…steps in the recipe were forgotten and skipped, and we ultimately felt gipped and taken advantage of for the amount of money we paid for this experience. The social setting was nice, but shouldn’t have been the star of the night. Also, this is community cooking, and Ofri was hesitant to ask students to wash their hands which is super unsanitary. I had to step in and create the standard of clean hands before cooking. She pointed out the various sinks we could all go to and wash our hands, and our station had watered down soap that didn’t sud in the least. This was ultra disgusting because this group of 17 were all hands on with the food that we would portion out and distribute once done. To be clear, we did not make our own individual meals, rather as a group we were hands on with peeling potatoes, flooding crepes, wrapping steak with prosciutto and pastry puff etc. Knowing so many barely washed hands were handling your food ruined the anticipation of the meal because we were peeling potatoes with our fingernails! You would think for $200+ a couple, there would be concentrated soap for the class, and the importance of clean hands would be expressed with conviction. Very stressful and unnerving and we had to ignore a bunch of red flags in order to muster our way through the class and ultimately through a few bites of the meal. Last but definitely not least, the first time she engaged us she questioned the origin of my husband’s first name and looked disappointed/underwhelmed that a Black person had a Hebrew name. It was a strange interaction, and he felt singled out and unnecessarily uncomfortable. Though she may have been curious, shocked, or whatever have you, it was a distasteful introductory convo to have in front of a group of people. She approached him and tried to educate him on the origin and asked him if he knew it was a Hebrew name. She shared that she was Islamic, and was curious when she saw his name on the roster, but his last name didn’t match. She may have thought it to be an innocent exchange however, he felt questioned in front of a group of people to explain his first and last name. Poor choice of convo, timing, and social awareness with diverse groups can definitely lead to extremely awkward moments regardless of your intentions- and that’s unfortunate. Overall, this was an extremely low bar for our first cooking class. Unfortunately, we would not recommend.
