Praça Luís de Camões 580, 1200-283 Lisboa , Portugal
What to expect
Praca Luis de Camoes
We'll begin our journey into the poetic soul of Lisbon by paying homage to one of its greatest literary figures: Luís de Camões. As we stand before his majestic statue, we'll be transported back to the Renaissance era through the poet's epic work "The Lusiads" which celebrated Portugal's seafaring adventures and cultural heritage.
R. Garrett 122
As we step inside the iconic Brasileira Café, we'll be greeted by the dazzling beauty of its Belle Époque décor and transported back to a time when the world was on the brink of modernity. We'll admire some of the most renowned modernist paintings reproduced, whose works adorned the walls of the café, creating a vibrant and eclectic atmosphere.
We'll spend some time in front of the birthplace of one of the most brilliant minds in Portuguese literature: Fernando Pessoa. Together, we'll delve into Pessoa's life and work, and discover how he revolutionized Portuguese literature and influenced generations of poets and thinkers.
Municipal Square
Our next stop takes us to the Praça do Município, a historic square in the heart of Lisbon that played a crucial role in the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic. But this square also holds a special significance for the modernist artists and writers of the early 20th century, who were inspired by the ideals of freedom. As we stand in front of the balconies of the City Hall, we'll read some of Sá-Carneiro's most evocative and daring poems, and reflect on how they embody the spirit of the modernist movement.
Cais das Colunas
Our next stop takes us to the emblematic Cais das Colunas, a waterfront plaza that has witnessed some of the most defining moments in Lisbon's history. Here, we'll pay tribute to one of the most passionate and tragic figures in Portuguese literature: Florbela Espanca.
Casa dos Bicos-Museu de Lisboa
Casa dos Bicos, a stunning 16th-century palace that stands as a testament to Lisbon's rich history and architectural heritage serves as the headquarters of the José Saramago Foundation. As we stand in front of the Casa, we'll read some of Saramago's most powerful and thought-provoking passages. He is the only Portuguese writer who has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Lisbon Cathedral
As we stand outside the 12th-century cathedral, we'll take a break from our literary journey to explore the rich history and architecture of this iconic landmark. We'll discuss how and when the cathedral was built, and the different styles and influences that shaped its design and decoration over the years.
Miradouro das Portas do Sol
As we keep making our way through the charming old district of Lisbon, Alfama, we'll reach one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in Lisbon: Portas do Sol. This view was not so different from what the great Portuguese poet Cesário Verde saw in the late 19th century. As we stand here, taking in the stunning views and the fresh breeze, we'll read some of Cesário Verde's most memorable verses through which he managed to capture the essence of the city.
Jardim Da Cerca Da Graca
Our final stop is the Jardim da Cerca da Graça, a charming garden nestled in the heart of the Graça neighborhood. As we take in the view, we'll read some of the gentle poetry of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, one of the most beloved Portuguese poets of the 20th century.
