Torre dello Ziro

(Pass by)

Torre dello Ziro is a medieval tower in the city of Ancona, Italy. It was built to protect the city and quarry which produced marble and limestone. The site is now a museum. The tower, probably built in the latter half of the 13th century, was originally known as Torre della Cerurgia and was part of a fortification system called the "Palestra" (court). The name comes from the quarry in which marble, limestone, and travertine were found. A local legend holds that the tower was built in a single day by a particular giant, named Iacopo. The tower is located in the center of Piazza del Nettuno, on one side of Piazza San Marco.
