Your Itinerary

Porta San Tomaso

Porta San Tomaso is the most majestic of the three gates of Treviso and was built by the podestà Paolo Nani in 1518. Enriched with decorative elements in Istrian stone, which recall the patterns of classical triumphal arches, it is covered by a wooden dome and lead. The effigy of the lion of San Marco is evident, visible on the external side.

Chiesa di San Francesco

The arrival of the Franciscan community in the city of Treviso dates back to 1216 and in 1231 construction work on the convent and church began, which ended in 1270. A simple structure between Roman and early Gothic, it has a Latin cross plan with a single large nave, covered by a wooden ship's hull ceiling.

Piazzetta San Parisio

Piazzetta San Parisio is one of the most evocative corners of Treviso. Now a pedestrian area, it is home to the daily fruit and vegetable market. Originally the square was the cloister of the Camaldolese nuns of Santa Cristina and San Parisio.

Isolotto della Pescheria

The Isola della Pescheria was built in 1856 to a design by Francesco Bomben. The project was born following the need to redevelop Piazza dei Signori and move the fish market, which represented a strong inconvenience for the citizens due to the unpleasant smells. Three natural islets present in the Cagnan Grande were thus united and from that moment the market is held from Tuesday to Saturday morning.

Palazzo Rinaldi, Riccati - Casa dei Putti acrobati

The square, intimate and bright like a Venetian campiello, took its name from the Rinaldi family of the same name, who arrived in Treviso in the thirteenth century in the retinue of the emperor Barbarossa. Three stately homes built in different eras overlook the square. The palace to the north incorporates parts of the family's first home.

Ponte Rinaldi

Under the bridge in front of you passes the Buranelli canal, so called because there is a sixteenth-century building which in the past was used as a warehouse by traders from the island of Burano.

The Cathedral of St Peter the Apostle

The cathedral of Treviso is the cathedral of San Pietro, whose origins date back to the early Christian age, while the Romanesque-style structures, such as the crypt, date back to the 11th and 12th centuries. In 1759 the building was rebuilt in neoclassical style, preserving the three Lombard apsidal chapels, built in Romanesque style. The facade and the staircase date back to 1836. Of particular interest inside are the altar of Blessed Enrico da Bolzano, the chapel of the Annunciation and the crypt.

Mosaici Romani di Piazza Duomo

The mosaic in via Canoniche, found in 1967, is believed to have belonged to a primitive baptismal hall in Treviso. Considering the layout of the mosaic decoration, it is estimated that the building dates back to the first half of the 4th century AD. On the outer band are visible pairs of dolphins, vine shoots, birds, cupids busy picking grapes, fish and shells.

Fontana delle Tette

It was the podestà of the Republic of Venice Alvise Da Ponte who had the Fontana delle Tette built in 1559, following a severe drought that struck the countryside and the city of Treviso. On the occasion of particular celebrations, the fountain tapped white or red wine. What you see in the courtyard of Palazzo Zignoli is a copy, while the authentic artefact is visible in a display case under the portico of the Palazzo dei Trecento.

Calmaggiore

Main road in the historic center of Treviso, it connects Piazza dei Signori to Piazza del Duomo. Its current layout largely corresponds to the ancient director of the Roman Tarvisium, which continued north to the San Chiliano bridge and south to the Santa Margherita bridge. From the basements of the first shop to the right of the Calmaggiore gallery, some remains of the Roman road of the time are visible.

Piazza dei Signori

Piazza dei Signori is located in the heart of the historic center of the city and has been an important point of reference for Treviso residents since the Middle Ages. Its name derives from the presence of the palaces of the ancient Treviso lordship (Palazzo del Podestà, Palazzo della Prefettura, Palazzo dei Trecento and Palazzo Pretorio). Over the centuries, the Piazza dei Signori has been the site of important historical, cultural and artistic events. Today it represents an important place of aggregation and meeting for Treviso residents and tourists.

Piazza Indipendenza

Piazza dell'Indipendenza is one of the central squares of Treviso. In the center of the square there is the monument of independence created by Luigi Borro, which represents the personification of the province of Treviso in order to trample on its chains, which symbolize the Habsburg domination. The statue is dedicated to the memory of the people from Treviso who died during the Third War of Independence in 1866, which was followed by the plebiscite which sanctioned the annexation of the Veneto provinces to the Kingdom of Italy.

Loggia dei Cavalieri

Treviso's Loggia dei Cavalieri is a historic building dating back to the end of the 12th century and has a facade decorated with a series of arched windows. Place of conferences, conversations and games for the nobility, it was a symbol of the political power assumed by the nobles during the period of the Free Commune. Example of Treviso Romanesque style, here influenced by Byzantine architecture, it has been restored several times over the centuries and is now used for cultural and artistic events.
