The Wayside Home of Authors

The Wayside, built-in 1700, has been home to numerous literary giants in the past. At one time it was owned by Louisa May Alcott, who wrote Little Women, and later by Nathaniel Hawthorne, who had the property surveyed by none other than Henry David Thoreau!

Meriam's Corner

This unassuming patch of land was the site of a disastrous turn of events for the British. Multiple American militias had a clear bead on this spot and opened fire as the British passed through, inflicting heavy casualties.

Paul Revere Capture Site

This is the site where Paul Revere was captured during his fateful Midnight Ride. Here, you'll revisit the full story of Revere's heroism and how his actions helped the Americans emerge victorious in Lexington and Concord.

Lexington Battle Green

Here in the Lexington Common is where the British fired the first shots of the battle. Little did they know they were kicking off a string of events which would lead to an embarrassing defeat here and a protracted war they would eventually lose. The tour concludes here, but there are more optional stops if you want to keep the adventure going.

Authors Ridge

Many famous authors lived in Concord, and several found their final resting place here in Authors Ridge. Thoreau, Alcott family members, Emerson, Nathaniel, and Sophie Hawthorne, and others are buried there.

Louisa May Alcott's Orchard House

Lexington Battle Green

The Battles of Lexington and Concord left 73 British dead and 174 wounded. 49 Americans died and 39 were wounded. But the aftershocks of the battle went far deeper than that. The American victory was all the proof the colonists needed that they could win a war against Britain.

Josiah Nelson House Site

At the far end of the visitor’s center parking lot is a path leading to Battle Road Trail, which runs the length of Minute Man park. It follows what remains of the original Bay Road, which is the route the British took to Concord and back. It passes many historic sites.

US National Park Services-Wayside

The Wayside, built-in 1700, became home to several of these famous figures. The Alcotts bought the house in 1845, naming it Hillside. The experiences of the Alcott sisters in the home were later written into her classic Little Women.

Admission Not Included

Thoreau Cabin Site

Just a mile outside of town, off Walden Street, is another site of literary history -- Walden Pond. This is where Thoreau lived for two years beginning in 1845, in a cabin he built, collecting his thoughts for his 1854 classic on self-reliance, Walden, or Life in the Woods.

Spotty internet access in the Concord location rendered the GPS element of the app practically useless. Disappointing, but we made our own way.

We enjoyed this driving & walking audio tour - very cool how it used your location to sync the right bit of the story! We explored and saw a lot of notable spots in Concord, which we found very charming. Great purchase!

Did this tour with my two teenage girls and we had a great time. Fun adventure for a girls weekend. With the visitor center at the North Bridge closed, it was nice to have some narrative.

The history was accurate and other than getting lost once it was a fun drive. The narration started automatically when we reached the points of interest. We did not expect this degree of automation and were pleasantly surprised. We did not have to keep our speed constant and could stop whenever we wanted without worrying about missing something.

Excellent information provided but the GPS directions were spotty at best. Missed a few turns and seemed to wonder if we were heading in the right direction. Still got a lot out of the information provided but to be a great experience the navigation function needs to be improved.

What a fantastic way to see and hear the history of Lexington and Concord! My husband and I absolutely loved it! It was like being on a treasure hunt looking for places to find. What an ingenious way to travel about at our leisure and see the historic sites! We highly recommend Stories with Action!

Excellent! We loved using this app for our trip. It was so informative! Great to travel along and listen to. Definitely recommend!

We decided to head to Concord and Lexington at the last minute, so we had not quite a full day there, and no time to book a tour with a group. This was a great alternative! We were able to learn a bit about the route from North Bridge to Lexington, and were able to get some hiking in as well. I loved the flexibility this offered - we took the day at our own pace, walked the trails as far as we wanted to walk, and we were able to grab lunch in the middle of it. I would have liked to hear more about the people involved and the homes we saw, but overall this was a great way to spend our short day in the area.

I paid for this, downloaded the app, got myself to the center of Concord, attempted to open the tour, and after multiple tries, gave up. I'll be requesting a refund next. If I can get a response.

We had hoped to get out of the car more, but it was a rainy day. So, in many ways, this tour was perfect for the day we had planned to drive from Concord to Lexington. As indicated, we started at the Old North Bridge and did go into the Visitor's Center and walked out to the bridge. A National Park Ranger was there to give us the history of the battle that started the Revolutionary War. After the museum, we got back in the car and used this audio tour to interpret what we were seeing. We pulled off the road as often as indicated, but due to the weather, did not get out to take the walks suggested. We got out to visit the Lexington Visitors Center and Buckman Tavern, both highly recommended! Suggestion: The next update of the audio tour could have auxiliary recordings to use in case of bad weather.
