I booked this tour way ahead after doing much comparison of tours. A few days before the tour I received a call from someone who said we couldn't go on Wednesday as booked because it was not available. He suggested Thursday but we were going to Naples then. We changed it to Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday morning we toured the Vatican and as we were in St. Peter's square my adult grandson had an epileptic seizure. I called the company and explained what had happened and that we would not be going on the tour and could we go on the original day some time. I was told that if we rebooked I would have to pay again. This did not seem right to me since they had changed the original date and we had an emergency. I think some flexibility would have been nice. We did not visit Baths of Caracalla.

The Baths was a good visit for us. Firstly, it’s so large that you can find shade throughout the audio guide. I highly recommend the Audio guide as it provides plenty of good information. The place was not packed which was a nice change of pace. If you happen to have time left in Rome, this is worth a 1:30-2:00 stop.

If you can, take VR. The ruins are impressive enough but when you slip on the VR to see how the originally looked like, you will be truly amazed. Easy to handle, simple gadget but gives an immersive experience.

Interesting experience, not too long but you got a good sense of the place. We did audio guide but they also have the option for VR.

I won’t deal with the actual ruins of the Baths of Caracalla, which are very impressive in their own right. What I was REALLY looking forward to, was seeing the reconstructions through “virtual-reality” goggles. We didn't book ahead, (I wasn’t going to lose any more of my money with Coopculture) but we did turn up just after opening, in order to guarantee a pair. After receiving the goggles, we were given a short demo and a printed sheet as to how to operate them. They are pretty straightforward to use. At least for one hopelessly “non-techie” lady and her “tech-savvy” husband. This was obviously not the case with others. The amount of people we saw later on in the day, who were muttering profanities at the goggles, or had simply given up on them, was astonishing. They are not custom VR goggles but a carrier for a smartphone. The smartphone runs a number of stereoscopic apps, viewed through the VR eye-pieces. The same app, but in different languages, which are loaded up when you collect the goggles. Part of that app is a map of the site, showing numbered points. The idea is to walk to the point, (using, I presume, GPS data and physical signage), point the cursor you see on the map in the goggles, over the number on the map. You then selected “Virtual Reality” and the goggles would bring up incredible “3-D” reconstructions of what the Baths looked like during the Imperial age. Any problems lie with the rather crude method used to navigate the screens. Because the goggles contain a smartphone, a mechanism is required to navigate the phone “touch screen”, (not being able to physically touch the phone). So all the lever on the side of the goggles did, was offer up (mechanically) a QR code. So for the thing to work, you needed to press the lever once - and wait. As we walked around the site, all we could hear at times were people repeatedly hitting this lever which (naturally) sent the smartphone into a tail-spin and “death”. My “goggle-phone” stopped working at one point, (reason unknown), and displayed only a grey screen. So rather than trek all the way back to the office, I simply opened it up, rebooted the phone and re-loaded the app. Not to be recommended at all, if such things worry you and could have earned me a deserved “slap on the wrist”.. We both enjoyed the VR experience immensely. It really was very clever and delivered a very informative and enjoyable hour. The talks from “virtual” Roman philosophers, the little details and an insight into how mind-blowingly impressive these baths would have been, delivered the best hour of our trip. Obviously, with such nascent technology, the risk of tech-failure is high. However, if you listen to the nice people in the office and take the time to read and obey the instructions - it will reward you handsomely.
