What to expect
To reach the Bom Jesus Sanctuary you can go on foot, by car or take the funicular, a remarkable engineering work from the 19th century. XIX. It was the first to be installed in Portugal, in 1882, still working with a water system to overcome a 300 meters difference in 3 minutes. The staircase leading to the top is formed by 17 levels decorated with symbolic fountains, allegorical statues and another Baroque decoration dedicated to various themes: the Via Sacra, the Five Senses, the Virtues, the Terreiro de Moisés and, at the top, the eight figures who participated in the Condemnation of Jesus. Not to be missed, the perspective at the bottom of the Staircase. Looking up, the fountains worked in granite on the various levels stand out from the white, forming a chalice, on which the church itself "rests".

In the year 1128 the Battle of São Mamede takes place, it was the first decisive moment for the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal.

Paco dos Duques de Braganca
Majestic manor house from the 15th century, built by D. Afonso - future Duke of Bragança, bastard son of King D. João I, who served as his residence and his second wife, D. Constança de Noronha. Palace of vast dimensions, with architectural features of a fortified house, roofs of strong slopes and numerous cylindrical chimneys that show the influence of the manor architecture of Northern Europe, it is a unique example in the Iberian Peninsula.
