Submarino Restaurant, Oceanogràfic Centre, Valencia This is a stylish restaurant that contrives to create an atmosphere where the customers are inside a fishbowl, while fish and reptiles swim on the ‘outside, looking in. The environment is stunning and the welcome is relaxed albeit a little disorganised. The Maitre d’ welcomes parties at the bottom of the main staircase and shows them to their table. Being a large restaurant, this meant leaving a queue of guests standing up the staircase. Everyone was relaxed though and it did not cause any real problem. Once seated the service was quick and we ordered a tasting menu with matched wines. The waiter was a moving around his covers extremely fast and straight away poured our first matched wine. Here things deteriorated. The wine was a Cava, which I like normally, however this one was totally flat and tasted bitter. It was obviously a leftover from at least the day before and while cold, was horrible. We tried to get the attention of the waiter but he had zipped off to the rest of his covers. Meanwhile our first course arrived via a different server. This is all minutes from the order being placed, so very prompt and the Monkfish carpaccio was delicious. After this the waiter did arrive back. At this point I know that we should have complained about the Cava, however he was moving around like a dervish and was obviously up against time pressures. We had also now drunk the horrible wine, so did not complain. He served us a white wine which I tasted quickly and it was very pleasant. I tried to get a name from the bottle but couldn’t see it and the waiter shot off before I had a chance to ask. The next course was served - Scallops with orange, courgette and pork fat. My dish was delicious, my partners scallop was under cooked. The speed of service was notable throughout and any pauses were enhanced with constant visits from the circling fish and reptiles who seemed to find us fascinating. Our wine had not been replenished but with effort, we managed to catch the waiter to ask for some more which he provided with only slight resentment. I asked him what it was and he showed me the label which simply said Octopus, so I still have no real idea. My guess would be a decent low cost white Rioja akin to Campo Viejo. The follow up dish was described as Octopus with Parmentier Potato. What we received was Octopus which was cold in the middle with extremely slimy, oily mashed potato. Disappointing. As the service was so speedy, we quickly received our next dish consisting of a tapas dish of cod fillet with crispy rice and mock black garlic pil pil. This was ok. Our glasses were changed and the red wine was served. Not bad, chilled, anonymous, label branded as ‘Octopus’ with no additional info but was swiftly accompanied by a piece of suckling pig with chestnuts and mango chutney. The menu described the pork as ‘crispy’, however in reality it was soft, chewy and cold. In fact heat did not play much of a role in any part of this meal. Puddings arrived. Spiced Coconut and Pineapple - OK but instantly forgettable, followed by Chocolate (“Textures Of”) - quite nice, especially as this was actually meant to be cold. I retrospect, we should not have had the tasting menu. Other tables nearby looked as if they received decent looking food from the a la carte menu and would have had a much more satisfactory choice of wine rather than the horrible to average wine we received. If you do choose the tasting menu, make sure you buy lots of wine a la carte as this definitely will improve your situation.
