First Murphy House

(Pass by)

M. J. Murphy was born in 1885 in Utah. In 1902, M.J., his mother Emma, and his sister Myrtle traveled to Carmel to meet with Frank Devendorf. He had promised M. J. work, building homes in the village. That same year, at the age of 17, Murphy built his first home for his mother and sister and by 1904, he was an associate with Frank Devendorf as a builder for the Carmel Development Company.

Harrison Memorial Library

(Pass by)

The Harrison Memorial Library was one of Carmel’s first public works projects. The library was constructed in 1927 and is named for Mrs. Ella Reid Harrison and her husband California Supreme Court Justice, Ralph Chandler Harrison.

The Valentine

(Pass by)

The bronze sculpture figure by George Wayne Lundeen is called The Valentine. It was purchased by the City of Carmel for $40,000 and installed in First Murphy Park in 1994. The man with his bow tie and sweater vest gently rests his hands on his cane and his head on the woman next to him. In her hand she holds a valentine, and the two are frozen in time, possibly daydreaming of days past.

Eight of us who had been to Paris a number of times were led on this tour by the extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic April. We saw places and learned interesting things about parts of Paris we had never seen before.

I couldn’t get it to work. I spent about an hour downloading stuff and trying to find the starting point etc. When we finally found the starting point the narrative did not fit our surroundings. We tried for another 30 minutes and finally gave up. Granted I may be challenged with technical stuff so others might find this to be easier.

- Pros: Takes you out of the touristy downtown of Carmel and into some of the back streets. Takes you by interesting houses and down by the ocean. - Cons: Some of the history wasn't that interesting to me (lots of detail about authors I'd never heard of). Some content needs update - one of the houses is in the process of being moved.

This GPS-based audio walking tour worked perfectly. The tour views houses from the street. We enjoyed the history and architecture lessons which put the houses and the region into perspective. My wife and I each used our phones but they were not always in sync. Since we were outside walking the street I would have in hind site used one device with the volume a little higher.

You learn so much detailed history of Carmel that I'm SURE many visitors miss! What a rich history, interesting homes, plus the gorgeous beaches!

This is a nice tour that shows a part of Carmel many people miss. Lots of history, interesting homes, beautiful views of Carmel Beach and Pebble Beach. Also, quite a bit of architecture.

What a hidden gem. My wife and I were looking for something to do while visiting Carmel (unfortunately things aren't yet back to normal). We stumbled upon this walking tour of a part of the Village we had never explored. Exploring the Jane Powers Walkway (tucked away for us to discover) and learning about some of the Bohemian shenanigans that were a huge part of Carmel's history was a delightful way to spend a part of the morning and to build up an appetite for our Sunday brunch. Highly recommeded.

Ok but GPS lagged actual position so kept having to walk back. Some good interesting houses it pointed out though.
