Greyfriars Kirkyard

All tours last approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes and leave from the "Tree of the Dead" located outside St Giles Cathedral on Edinburgh's Royal Mile. Each guide is a local expert on Edinburgh's fascinating and horrifying history, with their own unique style and delivery so no two tours are ever the same.  Combining history, humour and horror, this guided walking tour meanders through the labyrinth of Edinburgh's closes and alleyways before entering Greyfriars Kirkyard, the world's most haunted site! We finish the tour ends inside the Covenantor's Prison, a locked section of a 16th Century walled cemetery. Thought to be the world's first concentration camp, this is the lair of the 'Mackenzie Poltergeist', the best documented supernatural case of all time. Since City of the Dead has the only access to the Prison, we have been able to record all of the 'attacks' on visitors there. So far there have been over 900 - including 180 people who have been knocked unconscious. Can cause physical and mental distress. You join us at your own risk.

We had a wonderful time on our tour. Our tour guide, Ryan, kept the tour very interactive and fun throughout. He was by far the best guide we have had on a tour like this before and very knowledgeable. Would recommend to everyone!

Ross was AMAZING. Very talented guide with the perfect amount of dramatics and humor. He spoke to and included all of the many participants on the tour. He also gave us many details about the spooky locations we visited in Edinburgh. 11/10, DEFINITELY BOOK THIS TOUR!

Our guide, Ross, is an incredible storyteller; absolutely hysterical and knowledgeable. Not only did we learn a lot about the city’s history, we had so much fun and can’t wait to come back and check out the other tours!

Amazing dark history tour. Ross was the best guide. If you like dark, sarcastic, or ironic humor, this is a must do. A true showman, it felt like we had our own production of a macabre, yet factual documentary. I would recommend to anyone with a taste for the paranormal and a wicked sense of humor.

We booked a private tour for 11 of us for the city of the dead, we headed to meet our guide at 11pm and were out and about till 1am. I highly recommend (if you dare) to take the tour at night. Ross our guide was amazing, such a fantastic story teller, full of enthusiasm and charisma, the night was perfect with the right levels of horror, gore and a smattering of comedy. He was perfect!! even the couple of skeptics that were with us were totally drawn into the history of it all. We ended the night in bloody mckenzies tomb, which is a locked off part of the kirkyard and to have the experience of a private tour just made the night even better. 100% recommend the tour and would definitely recommend Ross. We will be back for a different tour as soon as we can!

A group of 11 of us done the private tour last night with Ross as our tour guide and we all agreed that it was a brilliant night. Our tour was at 11pm which was a perfect time. Ross is the best tour guide we've had, funny, dramatic, extremely knowledgeable - a great balance of them all. Although none of us were left with a mark from Blood Mackenzie, we could definitely feel his presence needed when standing in his mausoleum. I would highly recommend Ross as a tour guide and also the private tour.

Creepy and entertaining! Artemis Deadman is a fantastic storyteller, (with great style), and had our whole group hooked on his every word. Also a genuinely lovely chap who even gave us some Hp fun facts along the way because he saw we were fans. Wasn’t too cold in April so we were okay, but of course, do layer up as it is an evening time! We loved learning about all the stories of the graveyards, Edinburghs past, and having exclusive access to Covenanter’s Prison and the Black Mausoleum. Safe to say, I wasn’t possessed by the poltergeist so this is my genuine review and not the spirit of Mackenzie bigging up his own turf! Recommend this tour to everyone!

What an amazing tour and our guide Artemus Deadman was great with his story telling and so informative and being the last tour of the night he made it even more special. We did our Tour on Thursday 3rd April at 9pm and he had plenty of time with the people on our tour, he even said eerily enough there is 12 plus himself on tour making it 13 😳 We had the opportunity to enter the locked off prison of Greyfriars Graveyard that you can't access normally. He warned us of the Poltergeists so if you are into that then make sure you do this tour. Artemus is so knowledgeable about the city, the graveyard and the locked off prison. He kept us all on our toes so speak the whole tour was so entertaining. Great work and a great tour, thanks heaps Artemus 🙂🙂 On a side note we did tour at 9pm and it was so cold so if you thinking of going late, wear a few more layers than we did.

An excellent graveyard walk. We started around the cathedral and worked our way towards the graveyard. It was actually quite spooky, though nothing occult occurred on our visit (so far as we know...). Our tour guide was excellent and thoroughly engaging. His make up and stream punk attire was fitting and he was definitely a good story teller. His script was super factual, so would recommend this for history lovers. Note - if you go at night, it is Scotland! Wrap up warm. Warmer than you think you need to be as there will be periods of standing still in windy areas!

Ross was an amazing guide for our night of terror! Full of stories, wit and personality, a truly fabulous informative guide. The tour was the right balance of fun, gore and scare. Our 13 year old loved it especially the ending! ( no spoilers here) . We will defo do again next time we are here .
