Museu Monografico de Conimbriga - Museu Nacional

Inhabited since pre-Historic times, Conímbriga was occupied by Roman troops in 139 BC and it became the prosperous capital city of the Lusitania province. In the next century, during the reign of Emperor Augustus, the urban part of the city grew. It was during this period that some of the most important buildings for everyday life in a Roman city were build such as the forum, the amphitheatre and the thermal baths. Later, a three-nave basilica was built in the town’s centre. You can also visit the Museum where several rooms will take you to everyday life at this Roman city through objects discovered after many years of excavations, its religious life, architecture manor houses and their decoration and even life at the forum.

Alfredo was a great tour guide and tailored the tour to our abilities. My husband has issues with walking and seeing as this was our second tour of the day he was struggling. Alfredo worked with us to let us see as much as we could with our limited ability. I highly recommend this tour.

The entire day was amazing, starting with the outstanding Museum that explained the origins of the Rome, the Roman Empire and Conimbriga, followed by an excellent tour of the ruins and ending at the stream that supplied the water to Conimbriga. Ou tour guide was great - he was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions.

Interesting tour and guide was very knowledgeable. Mosaics in floor were beautiful-well preserved. We were happy to just do smaller museum but about Monday if you want to see full museum.

We both found this to be an informative and highly interesting tour. Alfredo knows his stuff and in a relaxed and humorous manner brought the Roman times to life. The stop at the spring that fed the aqueduct was great, as was the guided museum visit nearby. Unfortunately, when we arrived at Conimbriga, the site was closed due to a sudden strike. However, we could still walk around the ruins and Alfredo did his best to optimize the experience and get us as close to the ruins and mosaics as possible. He also took us on a little jaunt down the street to see a local artist cutting mosaic stones, and to view a house built on Roman arches and against the Roman walls. All in all a totally enjoyable morning and I would highly recommend this tour!

Alfredo was a great guide and the museum and ruins were amazing! Thre were so many beautiful mosaics.

Our guide was very knowledgeable about the ruins, which were fascinating. My wife and I both studied Latin, and therefore Rome, but to actually see it was beyond words. The fountain was amazing. We could have done with less museum.

Alfredo is very knowledgeable about Roman history and did a great job of setting the context for the ruins we saw. The tour was thorough, visiting the spring 4 km away that provided Conimbriga's water, remains of the aqueduct that transported the water, an interactive museum on Roman history in Portugal, the ruins, and a museum of artifacts from the ruins. The ruins themselves are amazing, with some of the most beautiful and best preserved Roman mosaics we have seen anywhere. (And we have been to Pompeii and Herculaneum.) We made a special trip to Coimbra to be able to take this tour, and we were not disappointed.

The tour was amazing and the guide was very knowledgeable! I would have given it a five but some things were misleading. The description didn’t say that the museum fares were excluded, which made us think they were included. Also we didn’t receive a souvenir photo unless the description meant the guide taking our photo using our own phones. It was unclear. Lastly it was a small thing but I feel like the guide could have paid the 50 cents for the fountains at the House of the Fountains.

Our guide, Ivone, was charming and went out of her way to ensure that we got answers to all our many questions. She even engaged museum staff to research artifacts for us when we showed excessive curiosity about an historic kitchen item. Nothing was too much trouble for her. A unexpectedly fascinating trip. We loved the ruins thanks to her enthusiasm.

Alfredo was a well-informed and friendly guide to the Roman ruins. Besides knowing his stuff on the Romans, we also learned loads from him about life in Portugal today. Highly recommended.
