Val d Orcia da Montepulciano

Hours 8.00: Departure from your accommodation from Rome with a luxury car and our English-Spanish speaking driver. A beautiful journey into the heart of Tuscany, while traveling through the famous Crete Senese (clay hills) and green hills, you will enjoy splendid panoramic views. The first stop will be at a winery where you will have a guided tour with a wine expert and the winery on the estate, here you can taste excellent wines and extra virgin olive oil directly from the source of production. Alfredo, winemaker, will present the history of wine from its origins, etc., and will advise you how to taste them, you can taste up to 5 organic wines of flavored varieties. The guided tour starts from the lush vineyards to the vast cellars, then we will go inside the structure to start a wonderful tasting of fine and fruity wines including the famous Nobile di Montepulciano wine; the Nobile di Montepulciano wine is made from a Sangiovese clone known as Prugnolo Gentile. The wine tasting will be accompanied by various local specialties such as cold cuts, hams, cheeses, the oil and bruschetta specialty, the typical sweet wine "vin Santo" with the famous "cantucci". From the beginning of the seventeenth century, this Noble wine was crowned by many as "the king of Tuscan wines" and thanks to the noble classes wishing to receive luxury wine, it became known as the "noble" and "aristocratic" wine, from which comes the name. Later we will visit the narrow and ancient streets of Montepulciano. The walled city of Montepulciano is perched on one of the beautiful Tuscan hills and still retains many incredible art treasures, as well as Etruscan and Roman cellars. And if you haven't had lunch on the farm, you can enjoy a delicious lunch in a local restaurant specializing in traditional Tuscan recipes (not included in the price).

Comune di Montepulciano

Montepulciano is a medieval town, hilly, beautiful and important for its eventful history, it has origins from the Etruscan people from the 4th century BC, surrounded by vineyards, it is very well known for its red wine Nobile. You can admire the famous "Torre di Pulcinella" is a clock tower surmounted by Pulcinella, one of the figures of the commedia dell'arte. The central square houses the 14th century Palazzo Comunale and the Duomo, which displays a huge triptych on the altar.

Historic Centre of the City of Pienza

We will visit the small and beautiful town of Pienza, in the heart of the prized Val d'Orcia of Tuscany. Pienza is an architectural jewel as well as a formidable resource for local gastronomic products, particularly sold both fresh and seasoned. In the fifteenth century Pienza was a small fortified town on top of a hill, without distinction and with certain economic problems, until Pope Pius II (Enea Silvio Piccolomini - 1458) decided to turn Pienza into an ideal Renaissance city, a partially successful urban planning firm. You will also have time at your disposal to explore this enchanting city everywhere.

The winery Canneto and the host Daniela at the winery were the best part. Although Alex, our driver, was a lovely man, he did not speak or understand English or Spanish. We read on a previous review that his English wasn’t great, but figured, since we speak Spanish as well (which it says he does) we’d be fine. Not so much. We were hoping for a private tour, we would have been offered more information, history, anything really…. But Alex was mostly just a driver. Not worth the price

We were on a cruise and took an extra day to leave from Rome to drive to Tuscany. Our driver was very nice, absolutely punctual and very experienced driver. However with limited English and needing to communicate somewhat thru Spanish a very second language to me it was difficult. We drove to the beautiful towns of Pienza and Montepulciano. We were not however prepared to tour the towns and glean any history or knowledge other than pictures on our own. I'm happy we were able to experience Tuscany but would make sure that should we do it again, with someone speaking full English.

This was the highlight of our stay in Rome. We had initially booked a different tour, and rebooked a private tour when a member of our group had last minute surgery. BEST DECISION we could have made. We agreed that this was well worth the money. We were picked up by our guide Alessandro who from the beginning was prompt, polite and very accommodating to the member of our group that was on crutches. We drove from Rome to Pienza. On the way we stopped a beautiful castle for photos. In Pienza, Alessandro accompanied us and told us about the city, walked around the shops and we tasted delicious cheeses, vinegar and olive oil. We traveled to Montepulciano where we were greeted by Daniela and toured the cellars. Daniela was personable and knowledgeable. The tour was the perfect length and we sampled many, many wines and olive oil. The views from the vineyard were stunning. We could not stop talking about what an amazing day it had been. We ended up purchasing wine and olive oil because it was so delicious. We opted to have lunch at a restaurant (there were some picky eaters in the group), and Alessandro brought us to a lovely restaurant. We do not speak Italian, and Alessandro stayed with us until we ordered to ensure the order was placed correctly. The lunch was absolutely delicious! We really appreciated the kindness and hospitality provided throughout the tour. We traveled as 3 sisters in our late 20’s- early 30’s and our mom who is in her 60’s, and all of us said we would do this again in a heartbeat! I truly cannot recommend this tour enough!

So, we saw Rome. Venice and Positano- but none can compare with our day at Montepulciano! Franco was our guide-so friendly and jovial. We were picked up in a black Mercedes sedan and transported from our hotel and back to our hotel. The town has rustic charm and simplicity, medieval architecture, sweet transformation into a Christmas village and amazing vistas and views of countless olive trees and grapes connected by narrow yet intimate stony streets made for an amazing romantic experience. The wine, cheese and meat tasting was amazing (they ship to home)and so was the lively market in the town center where you could pick up all the meats and cheeses you could imagine, along with pasta, pastries, olive oils. If you’re clothes shopping, better off in Positano. We would love to come just to stay here for a week or two. Peaceful tranquility!
