MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology

(Pass by)

The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) is a museum of contemporary art in Lisbon, Portugal that crosses three areas in a space for debate, discovery, critical thinking and international dialogue. It is situated in the Belém area, next to the Tagus River, on land conquered by Lisbon and the Tagus River, at the end of the 19th century, in one of the most historical monumental areas of the city where we can find, among others, the Jerónimos Monastery, the Centro Belém Cultural Center, the Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries, the Palace and Museum of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, or the National Cordoaria.

Torre de Belem

Strategically built on the north bank of the Tagus River, between 1514 and 1520, to defend the Lisbon Bar, it is one of the architectural jewels of the reign of D. Manuel I. In the architectural ensemble we can separate two distinct bodies, models of military architecture: the medieval keep and the modern bulwark which, with two levels for artillery fire, allowed a longer range, shallow and ricochet shooting over the water. It is a cultural reference, a symbol of the specificity of the country that passes through privileged dialogue with other cultures and civilizations. Guardian of our Individuality and Universality, this status was confirmed when, in 1983, it was classified by UNESCO as a "Cultural Heritage of All Humanity".

Henrique, the driver of the discoveries. A stylized caravel faces the sea, leading the Infante D. Henrique and some of the protagonists (32) of the overseas gesture and culture of the time, navigators, cartographers, warriors, colonizers, evangelists, chroniclers and artists, are depicted with the symbols that individualize them.

We had a wonderful tour of 1.5 hours with Jean Rech! Very engaging and kind. We would recommend it for sure. Thanks a lot!!

Jean was waiting for us at our hotel and welcomed us warmly onboard - riding on the Tuk Tuk was such fun. My 10yr old just loved the novelty of it. Jean was intent on giving us the full experience and history of all we drove by, patiently waiting if we need to take photographs. I think it's the ideal tour for pick-up, drive out to Belem and back if your visit is short!

We were met outside by Pedro Martines who was extremely friendly. He explained what we will be doing. We then set off and Pedro started talking about the history of Portugal and Lisbon. He was really knowledgeable and it was great to interact and he answered all my questions. On the way we would stop get out and walk and talk and Pedro would tell us interesting facts and show us some amazing places . In Belem we saw some amazing sites walked and saw more learnt lots of things it was an amazing 2 hours. If you ever get the chance to do the tour on the tuk tuk make sure it is with Pedro and you will not be disappointed. He made the experience memorable

We stopped off at Lisbon during our cruise and we’re welcomed by Eco Tuk Guide which we’d booked beforehand. Pedro was our guide and he was absolutely fabulous and very informative, the whole team we were with were amazing and became a family by the end of the trip and had a group photo with all the other team. All the guides were smiling, funny and so lovely and the whole trip was a tremendous experience! Pedro deserves to be commended for his hard work and customer service, he is a credit to his team
