What to expect
MAAT - Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia
The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) is a museum of contemporary art in Lisbon, Portugal that crosses three areas in a space for debate, discovery, critical thinking and international dialogue. It is situated in the Belém area, next to the Tagus River, on land conquered by Lisbon and the Tagus River, at the end of the 19th century, in one of the most historical monumental areas of the city where we can find, among others, the Jerónimos Monastery, the Centro Belém Cultural Center, the Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries, the Palace and Museum of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, or the National Cordoaria.
Torre de Belem
Strategically built on the north bank of the Tagus River, between 1514 and 1520, to defend the Lisbon Bar, it is one of the architectural jewels of the reign of D. Manuel I. In the architectural ensemble we can separate two distinct bodies, models of military architecture: the medieval keep and the modern bulwark which, with two levels for artillery fire, allowed a longer range, shallow and ricochet shooting over the water. It is a cultural reference, a symbol of the specificity of the country that passes through privileged dialogue with other cultures and civilizations. Guardian of our Individuality and Universality, this status was confirmed when, in 1983, it was classified by UNESCO as a "Cultural Heritage of All Humanity".
Padrao dos Descobrimentos
533/5000 Isolated and highlighted on the Tagus Seawall, the Monument to the Discoveries evokes Portuguese overseas expansion, epitomizes a glorious past and symbolizes the greatness of the work of Infante D. Henrique, the driver of the discoveries. A stylized caravel faces the sea, leading the Infante D. Henrique and some of the protagonists (32) of the overseas gesture and culture of the time, navigators, cartographers, warriors, colonizers, evangelists, chroniclers and artists, are depicted with the symbols that individualize them.
Centro Cultural de Belem - CCB
Belém Cultural Center is located in Praça do Império. It was originally designed to host the headquarters of the Portuguese Presidency of the European Community and later to develop cultural activity.
Mosteiro dos Jeronimos
The Jeronimos Monastery has been classified as a National Monument since 1907 and, in 1983, was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, along with the Belém Tower. On 7 July 2007 it was elected as one of the seven wonders of Portugal. Closely linked to the Portuguese Royal House and the Discoveries epic, the Jeronimos Monastery was, from an early age, internalized as one of the symbols of the nation.
Palacio de Belem
Formerly palace of kings, it is today a national monument and seat of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic.
