Destrehan Plantation

Get picked up at your hotel in New Orleans to start your combination plantation and swamp tour trip, which lasts a bit more than 6 hours. The first stop is Destrehan Plantation. Established in 1787 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Destrehan Plantation remains the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi Valley. We invite you to travel from the French and Spanish Colonial periods, through the Antebellum grandeur of the sugar barons, to the ravages of the Civil War and the rebirth of reconstruction. You will find yourself immersed in the rich history of Louisiana when French was the language, and the white gold of sugar drove the economy. Family stories of those free and enslaved set against the fabric of history will intrigue every visitor to the site.

Next, enjoy an airboat swamp tour in a smaller boat for a more personalized experience. An airboat swamp tour is a high speed adventure that is part tour and part ride, and it's only 35 minutes from New Orleans. You will experience the best of both: a swamp tour and an airboat ride. You will travel at high speeds in the airboat then slow down and stop for pictures. Along the way, you will get a personal tour by your local captain. The airboats have stadium seating, so that the person in front of you does not obstruct your view. So every airboat seat is great for experiencing the tour and viewing the wildlife. Yes, gators will get close, real close. So close that you will be able to look into those reptilian eyes. Alligators do hibernate in the colder months, but the experienced captains know where to look for them. On average, during the winter, you have better than a 50/50 chance of seeing a gator. In the warmer months, you will see a gator. Every tour is unique and you never know what will be around the next corner. The area toured is a combination of swamp, marsh and lake. So you may see anything from a bald eagle to a pelican to osprey to an owl. The airboats are driven by a 454 Chevy Engine that will produce speeds of up to 35 miles an hour. They are propelled by a huge fan that will blow air from the back of the boat in excess of 200 miles an hour. These tours are truly a blast! They ride in inches of water and go where traditional boats cannot go. The boats were designed to take you to inaccessible areas of the swamp, places that you cannot reach by foot or car. It is a unique experience.

Loved the air boat ride and being able to hold a baby alligator. Made my day! The plantation was nice but only focused on the main house building.

Excellent tour of the oldest plantation, you felt as if you where there yourself. The swamp tour was amazing, our guide was great, very informative and let us hold a baby gator! Loved it would use this company again!

This experience was efficiently run with good communication. Our tour guides were knowledgable and very interactive. Got a good history of the plantation life and an "up close and personal expeience with alligators. Good value for our money. I would stronly suggest that guests be advised, that in addition to bringing water, guests should bring substantial snacks as food avaiaiblity is quite limited.

I loved this tour, and I read the reviews on the baby alligator and how people felt it was inhumane but our tour guide said these alligators have a 30% chance of survival in the first 3 years of life. Their parents, predators and boats are many ways they can meet their demise, so with that in mind people need to chill. Holding the alligator made me so empathetic and amazed by this creature. When we went fast it was an amazing experience. Our tour guide was informative and had a hilarious humor and honestly knew how to work a crowd! I will come back again my next visit and even referred my friends that came in to town after we went!

One of the best days we've ever spent with a tour company. We took our 9 year old grandson, who was fascinated with both the plantation tour and the swamp. The tour of Destrehan Plantation was an unvarnished presentation of the slave-based economy, with a guide who was an expert in the history. Brad, our guide on the swamp tour, was so knowledgeable about animals, environmental change and degradation of the wetlands, and the economic impact of policy on the way of life of people living in the area. I HIGHLY recommend using this company. If you do both tours, take snacks and drinks for the bus. We were picked up at 8:15 and dropped off at 2:45.

Airboat was awesome - got us a bit wet to start but it's definitely an upgrade from the slower pontoon I did 10 years ago. Overall amazing tour - got lucky on a good sunny day and saw lots of gator, wildlife and fun boat. Oak alley is something to see to appreciate the beauty that it is, but also understand the tragedy of slavery and raise awareness of what the past was like and how to move forward.

I loved this tour. It was very informative and I learned some things about the past that I hadn't known. The airboat tour was amazing. Our guide, Dewey, was knowledgeable, fun, and caring. He clearly loves the area and was very respectful when talking about the land and the animals that exist there.

Would have liked some time to see the grounds. Had five minutes after the tour of the house no time to see video or demonstrations. Was disappointed. But the tour was informative.

Nicole_R

Airboat tour was awesome. Seen lots of alligators. Biggest was about 10-12 ft. Very knowledgeable about the area, vegetation and animals both. Definitely recommend. The plantation tour was good but felt rushed. Didn’t have time to look around at the other buildings.
