Admission Included

Pointe du Hoc

In World War II, Pointe du Hoc was the location of a series of German bunkers and machine gun posts. Prior to the invasion of Normandy, the German army fortified the area with concrete casemates and gun pits. On D-Day, the United States Army Provisional Ranger Group attacked and captured Pointe du Hoc after scaling the cliffs. United States generals including Dwight D. Eisenhower had determined that the place housed artillery that could slow down nearby beach attacks. (Wikipedia)

Omaha Beach

Omaha Beach was one of five beach landing sectors designated for the amphibious assault component of Operation Overlord during the Second World War. On June 6, 1944, the Allies invaded German-occupied France with the Normandy landings. "Omaha" refers to an 8-kilometer (5 mi) section of the coast of Normandy, France, facing the English Channel, from east of Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes to west of Vierville-sur-Mer on the right bank of the Douve River estuary. Landings here were necessary to link the British landings to the east at Gold with the American landing to the west at Utah, thus providing a continuous lodgement on the Normandy coast of the Bay of the Seine. Taking Omaha was to be the responsibility of United States Army troops, with sea transport, mine sweeping, and a naval bombardment force provided predominantly by the United States Navy and Coast Guard, with contributions from the British, Canadian and Free French navies. (Wikipedia)

Cimetiere Americain de Colleville-sur-Mer

The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is a World War II cemetery and memorial that honors American troops who died in Europe during World War II. A memorial in the cemetery includes maps and details of the Normandy landings and military operations that followed. At the memorial's center is Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves, a bronze statue. The cemetery also includes two flag poles where, at different times, people gather to watch the American flags being lowered and folded. The cemetery, which was dedicated in 1956, is the most visited cemetery of those maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), with one million visitors a year. In 2007, the ABMC opened a visitor center at the cemetery, relating the global significance and meaning of Operation Overlord. (Wikipedia)

Our guide, Jean Baptiste was very knowledgeable and we really enjoyed point du hoc and Omaha beach. The American cemetery is pristine and awe inspiring.

This was, of course, a heart wrenching tour. To actually touch the historic sands was quite an experience. Our guide was very knowledgable and shared many insights. She also helped me arrange a cab ride back to the train station so I could catch my train back to Paris in time. Unfortunately I did not have time to visit the museum. That will have to wait until another visit. We were given plenty of free time to explore on our own. All in all worth the time and I would do it again. Pray the weather gods are on your side. It was rainy, cool and damp for our tour. Still would not hesitate to do it again.

Anna was the best tour guide to have for this. She provided great details at each of the three points and along the way to them

This museum is *exceptional* and should without question be the first stop if you are coming to Normandy to expand your understanding of WW II history. I'm sure other reviews go into more detail than I have time to, but plan to spend at least three hours there. I have been to the Holocaust museum in DC and that is excellent but Caen really covers so much more from the treaty of Versailles onward. Bravo Caen! As we went to other museums we found the written information redundant to what we read at Caen and moved through them a little faster just looking at the displays. Note: There is a Bistro but the food is pretty sub par and expensive, so bring your own lunch or go after or before lunch and eat somewhere else. It's that bad. I just mention it so you can plan the length of time you need to spend at the museum without getting hangry. : )

Our guide (Evie?) was excellent and really knew her stuff. The tour took in a number of sights and she was able to talk about each one. Thanks for a great tour!
