Aveiro

The capital of the Ria, a vast lagoon where the freshwater of the River Vouga joins with the sea, Aveiro is intersected by canals, genuine streets of water, along which can be seen gliding the brightly coloured boats known as barcos moliceiros. Originally founded in the time of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Aveiro is now one of the most interesting cities on the Portuguese coast. Discover the history of this beautiful city and tasty the traditional pastry, "Ovos Moles".

Ria de Aveiro

Cruise Aveiro's dazzling canals on a classic Moliceiro (traditional boat) Relax and enjoy the landscape on this traditional boat, that once was used to collect seagrass in the lagoon.

Praia da Costa Nova

The last stop is Costa Nova do Prado beach, famous only by the name Costa Nova. The most picturesque aspect of Costa Nova is its coast road along which a line of wooden huts is painted in brightly coloured stripes alternating with white. Built by fishermen as shelters and equipment stores, the huts have now been converted into rather characteristic holiday homes.

Small group of 8; left a few minutes early, driver gave us some facts along the way. Boat ride was lovely and we found it just the right amount of time afterwards to walk around the town. Visit to the beach area was nice but perhaps less time as many others mentioned would be fine; 1/2 hr inside of 40 minutes. I gave it a 4 star as the tour was advertised as 4 hrs for start to finish yet it was 40 minutes over so be aware in case you make other plans afterwards.

Jose was an awesome guide for the day, gave lots of history and information whilst on the bus. We loved both Costa Nova and Aveira. Some more time at costa nova would’ve been great.

We took this tour on our last afternoon of our trip to Porto having seen all the main attractions of the city. The colourful photos and lively description made the tour sound inviting and a good option to squeeze in some final sights. As the tour was only from 2-6pm, and as it took about an hour to get to Casa Nova, 15 minutes to get to Aveiro and an hour back, this meant the time exploring was actually very brief. We had 30 minutes to explore Casa Nova, a 40 minute boat ride and 50 minutes at Aveiro. The tour included travellers from various locations so information was given twice, first in English then French. The information given on the tour bus was fairly basic (which roads were were taking, which trees we were seeing) and difficult to focus on due to the language switching, but credit to our guide for his enthusiasm. Casa Nova only needed the brief stop to take photos of the seafront and grab an ice cream before heading back to the coach. The boat ride at Aveiro was not worth the time and consisted of going up and down an industrial canal with about 5 minutes at the end going through Aveiro town proper. There was commentary on the salt industry but it was mostly tourist fluff. The 50 minutes in Aveiro was actually 40 once factoring in walking to and from the bus, and then 35 due to the very brief introduction and signposting. Due to relaxed service we only had time to try a recommended soft egg (an acquired taste) and have a coffee, have a power walk through a few streets and then head back. In hindsight it probably would have been nicer to visit some of the lesser known places in Porto than have spent the time travelling for little pay off - Aveiro is very small and Porto riverfront much lovelier than the canals. If you're in Porto for a long time then it's a filler activity (and perhaps a welcome relaxed day for tired feet, but it is a mix of resting on the bus/boat and clock-watching and rushing otherwise!) but don't go due to fear of missing out, and consider a trip to the national park as a day trip instead.

Great experience, our guide was very friendly and informative and the boat tour was excellent! Did not know it would be in English and Spanish.

This was a lovely day out. Beautiful scenery on the way there while travelling on a very comfortable coach. Really enjoyed the canal trip. Our tour guide was amazing, very knowledgeble and had plenty of funny stories to tell us. 10/10

Sadly, this was a complete waste of time and money. We did not have enough time in Aveiro to shop, explore, or enjoy the surroundings. Our guide did not share any useful information or historical stories about the city. Wish we had taken the train on our own so we could have a better experience!

thought we had a small group tour of 6-8 people but ended up a group of 28...too big! The guides were nice but would never have signed up for a tour this large. SO...everyone, READ THE FINE PRINT BEFORE BOOKING
