Valley of the Nuns

In 1566 the nuns from the Santa Clara convent fled from pirates attacking Funchal and found seclusion here, where they also brought the convent treasure. The parish is very isolated, and locals mainly live of what they grow. The local chestnuts are delicious and are used in everyday cooking.

We loved the whole experience. Nelson, our guide, was really helpful, professional and knowledgeable. There were only 3 of us on our tour and we had plenty of time at each stop. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5. Diego was a brilliant tour leader stopping to show us all the plants, fruit the country has to offer. We had enough time to stop and roam around before going on to our next stop. Worth the morning or afternoon to see the beautiful sights of Madeira. Thank you.

Had a great time visiting Nun’s Valley, Pico Dos Barcelos, Curral Das Freiras and Pico Areeiro. Lino was very knowledgeable, gave us all the history and ensured we got the best viewpoints. Would definitely do another jeep safari…..best way to travel!

Juan was a great guide but there was no pastry tasting or wicker factory as stated which was a shame.

After 30 years of coming to Madeira and enjoying many lovely experiences, a safari guided by Nuno was the crowing glory. Nuno’s attitude knowledge and experience patients friendliness was beyond exemplary. We had a fantastic half day tour. Thankyou Nuno. We would also like to thank our other 2 fellow travellers Adrian and his wife from the Isle of Man.

Overall it was quite a good tour, unfortunately Juan was running late (he did inform us via email of this), but it seemed the tour was then rushed, missed out wicker basket viewing, journeys seemed erratic and rushing and speeding to next stop each time. We were sat in the back, so had a difficult view of surrounding scenery as roof was in eyeline, felt like we were in the cheap seal, while other 4 passengers paid the same and sat in comfort.

Was booked for 830 and received many messages and reminders . Was greeted with a very rude driver calling us saying we had booked for 8am . We actually ready and met him then at 815 but felt uncomfortable initially. Trip was great though

We were a group of 12 and did 4 tours (2 full day, 2 half day) with Green Devils. Our guides (Jose & Nuno) we’re great, lots of info, lots of fun - forests, mountains, volcanoes, up in the clouds, down by the sea, we did it all. Lots of off road tracks (some a bit scary 😱), but all fantastic. Lunches good, ponchas (rum punches) even better 🤪. Cannot recommend highly enough.

First thing to note, if you have Nelson, you are in for a great experience!! Nelson arrived to pick us up bang on time. We visited a number of sites including valley of the nuns, Pico do Arieiro plus others. Nelson was very knowledgeable about Madeira and was full of facts all the way round. Unfortunately Pico do Arieiro was covered in cloud, but we were prepared for that with rain coats. Highlight would have been the view but the view above the valley of the nuns stole the show in terms of views. But apart from the views, Nelson was great and kept us laughing most of the way round!! If you could get in the back of the vehicle, I would recommend here for a bit of extra room. I would highly recommend this tour.

Great, fun tour of some of the island of Maderia. Nun's Valley is worth seeing and you get taken to the 3rd highest mountain peak There is some fun off road, where you can stand up in the back of the jeep. Nelson was an informative and friendly guide.
