Caldeira das Furnas

Active volcane crater containing lake, fumaroles, hot springs, a beautiful village known for its volcanic manifestations and the beautiful parks. Here we will have several stops, know the traditional volcanic stew "cozido das Furnas" and optionally enjoy a hot spring bath.

We spent an amazing day with our guide Paulo. Since we only had 1 day for our tour of Sao Miguel, Paulo arranged a perfect day for us which included all we wanted to see and then some. In the course of the day we visited sete cidades, Furnas, the hot springs for leisurely bathing, the tea plantation, along with a delicious lunch, and more. His knowledge of the island is impressive. His English is excellent and he even helped us navigate some Portuguese expressions. We highly recommend this guide. You will not be disappointed. Connie & Vito from Canada

Paulo did a great job of occupying my time the entire day. The trip to Furnas was the best, from experiencing the hot springs to seeing the parish of Furnas at eye level, and finally viewing it from Pico do Ferro, 570 meters above. Gorgeous landscape. High marks for this tour and to a well prepared tour guide in Paulo.

We spent 3 days with Paulo seeing all of San Miguel. And thanks to his skill and experience and local knowledge we had a great time - despite some awful weather! Paulo is a great host and ambassador for San Miguel. He is very friendly and informative. He even offers advice on photography. Highly recommended! If we visit San Miguel again it will definitely be with Paulo.

Paulo was such an excellent guide, so knowledgeable, planned a super route based on all our requests and took us to a delicious cafe and great restaurant which we would never have found by ourselves and he was fantastic with the children, keeping them engaged and being flexible about their needs for stops. My wife and I and our two children (12 and 8) had four full day private tours with Paulo at FUNtastic Tours. It was amazing and Paulo is truly a wonderful guide. I asked him to arrange the itineraries for us and what he provided was such a deep, rich, and fun experience that was well beyond what we could have imagined. Even on the weeks to months before we traveled he communicated with me by email and shared lots of information and help and made us feel like we were going to be in good hands. Paulo provided so much more than we could have ever gotten on our own, he opened our eyes to so many amazing details about the island, and he made it feel like we were traveling with a friend that was showing us around. He was great with our kids and super friendly and respectful the whole trip. Paulo does a great job outlining the tour and reviewing the path with a map before we left each day, then at the end of the day, and then several times here and there through the week helping tie everything together. It really helped keep the many things we did in perspective all week. Our first day we went to Sete Cidades with a stop over at Ponta da Ferraria where we had a swim in an ocean bath near the exit of a hot spring which warmed the ocean water. Then a wonderful tour all around Sete Cidades, a great lunch, and some short hikes with amazing views. The second day we went to the Pineapple Plantations where Paulo gave us a great lesson on how it all works, then the same insights at the tea plantations. Following that we stopped at Ribeira dos Caldeiroes in Nordeste, then a nice tour of the Nordeste region all the way down to Povoacao. All along the way he pointed out interesting historical facts as well as insights into the geology and natural history of the region and island. Paulo does his job explaining everything in a very engaging way and even my youngest child was well informed after the trip and it sparked many interesting questions and conversations after the day and at dinner most nights. The third day we went along the south coast and had a stop in Vila Franco do Campo where we learned a lot about the local pottery traditions and saw some amazing views and had some great pastries. Paulo even arranged for us to visit with a local pottery group, get a free tour highlighting the history of pottery in the region, and then even a pottery class for our kids (and us too!). We were able to learn to spin and make pottery with a wonderful teacher, all with a great view of the sea. My kids will never forget that experience and neither will we. From there we drove to Furnas and had a tour of the area followed by what is usually offered as the "hot springs night tour" where we had dinner of the traditional stew and time in the hot springs. Another great day. The last day we went to Lagoa do Fogo and had lots of discussion about the natural history of the area along with great views, then down to Ribeira Grande and Santa Barbara beach, then a nice lunch with great views of the ocean. From there down to Caloura for some more great views after which our four days with Paulo came to an end. We were all sad to leave and my kids were even saying how much they missed Paulo after he left. In all we had an amazing experience and there was nothing Paulo could have done better. If we could have a guide like him everywhere we travel we'd be extremely happy. You can't go wrong with Paulo!
