Here we will visit the Furnas Lake. We will witness the removal of the cozido (a local dish cooked in the caldeiras). We will make our way to the restaurante where the cozido will be served.

My family booked both a half day jeep Sete Cidades and full day van Furnas tour. Both days were packed with adventure. The jeep tour was a blast, a fun off road journey with breath taking views of the lake from above and ground level. Add to that the aqueducts, Igreja de Sao Nicolau, cafe stop and amazing additional viewing points. It was an amazing half day that left us looking forward to our next tour. The jeep was perfect choice for the off road experience to Sete Cidades but on the full day Furnas tour we choose a van to be a bit more comfortable. The view of Vila Franca from Nossa Senhora da Paz is not to be missed, add to that relaxing in hot springs while it rained (still awesome), beautiful gardens, cozido lunch (super tasty), viewing the furnas area, spouts for sipping spring water, the tea farm tour and again additional stops with amazing viewing points. We were fortunate to have Mario for both of our tours, it was like time spent with a new friend. Mario let us set the pace and provided options for our destinations. In addition to providing a wealth of information about this beautiful island he shared additional anecdotes along the way and left us with restaurant and hiking tips (obrigada Mario!). Highly recommend, we could not have smoothly coordinated this much adventure without booking these tours!

Traveling solo to the Azores, I hired Greenzone for 3 private tours (sete cuidades, Lagoa do fogo and Furnas). I didn’t want to rent a car and spend time figuring out where to go, where to park, etc. with limited time on Sao Miguel. My two guides, Rodrigo and Sérgio were so great to spend the days with one on one. When weather didn’t cooperate for an activity, they were quick to suggest another. Conversation was easy and interesting with great details about history, local customs, suggestions for where to eat (and not to eat!) Recent rains had raised the level of Lagoa do Fogo, making the hike around the lake impassable. (Nearly). Sergio carefully picked rocks, roots and branches for us to navigate “almost” to the beach so I wouldn’t miss an experience that was important to me. One of the best days of my life. I often hire private guides for touring when traveling solo (or with my children). I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Greenzone to a friend, whether looking for a private experience or small group.

Instead of hiring a car, we decided to book 3 tours during our Sao Miguel stay, Full Day Tour to Furnas with Terra Nostra Gardens, Sete Cidades & Lagoa and Full Day Tour to Nordeste. We did not regret for a minute, our 4 x 4 trips were booked with with Greenzone Tours and our driver was Ricardo each time. What an amazing Guide he is! His love and enthusiasm for the island is wonderful and extremely infectious, making our holiday to the Azores one of the best we ever had. He took us to all the beautiful major sites but also to many stunning areas which are off the beaten track and which we may never have discovered without him. Being an Azorean, Ricardo's all round knowledge was brilliant, he was informative and considerate, making each trip interesting yet fun.
