Our tour was amazing. Our guide Nicko had so much knowledge of his island. Any question we asked was met with an answer. The adventure was filled with fun. The open aired jeep allowed us to see panoramic views of the city and the forest. The views of the cliffs were unmatched. Highly recommend this tour.

Five of us took a great Portuguese 4x4 drive through Madeira. Our driver, Tiago, was a great driver with a great sense of humor. He offered us an off rode experience and it was very exciting. He also showed us many top spots of the island. We would highly recommend this company.

December 13, 2023 - Madeira Portugal. The last stop on our cruise before heading to Ft Lauderdale was to the island of Madeira Portugal. upmountainmaderia.com was our tour guide and were excellent. Madeira is a small island in the Atlantic Ocean and is absolutely beautiful. Population is about 250,000 people. Coupled with the lack of flat areas on the island, space is at a great premium. The roads are amazing with constant switchbacks. Being in the brake repair business is probably a pretty good business on the island. One of our stops on the island was near the eastern tip, where a statue of Christ the King overlooks the harbor. While the statue is not as large as the one in Rio, it is a few years older. Everywhere one looks in Madeira is a beautiful vista; the island views are spectacular. In the 1850's, an entrepreneur came up with the idea of a Toboggan Ride, to help people get down one of the main mountains to the city. This Toboggan Ride has become a large tourist attraction. Two drivers in white clothing and straw hats guide the Toboggan, we will do this attraction on our next visit. One of the greatest soccer (football) players of all time is Renaldo, a resident of Madeira. One of the only flat surfaces on the island is his home field. Renaldo has also donated to the local community and is a local hero. Our driver took us to a mountain top gift shop, and we stopped for coffee. We had a spectacular overlook of a small town, over 1000 feet below us. Some shopping also took place! Because space is at a premium in Madeira, and grapes are grown to produce Madeira wine, other crops are grown below the vines. Madeira was a wonderful island; I'm looking forward to our return. When we do, we will be certain to use upmountainmadeira as our tour guide!

This was undoubtedly THE BEST excursion we had on our transatlantic VV cruise, but I think the BEST excursion I’ve ever taken, by far. Diogo was a charming and delightful guide and had the inside track to show us all of the highlights, beating the crowds to come later, and his dialogue gave us the flavor Madeira that only a true local could do. I don’t write many reviews, but TRUST me, this comfortable journey is worth every dollar and more. We WILL be back and we WILL ride with you again. This tour was one of the top highlights of our trip to Portugal. Miguel was an excellent guide and made the day fun, educational and special. We stopped at several great spots, as we asked him to take us "away from the tourist spots" and into the heart of Madeira. We saw spectacular views, local villages, off-road trails and many other unique places we wouldn't have seen with other tours. If you're like us and want to get off the beaten path, this would be a great tour for you. Family of four fit in the back of the UMM with no problem... definitely great to have the open-air top to stand and see the sights.
