This tour was a huge disappointment, except for the “gastronomique” lunch, which was a welcome and much-needed break from the frenzied pace of the walking tour. The guide was rude, dismissive and oblivious to the needs of the large group (more than 50 people, including elders and small children ). She speed-walked up and down the hilly, cobblestoned streets, often leaving dozens of people (not just us!) 3-4 blocks behind her, struggling to catch sight of her in the crowds. The radio system was unreliable in many of the heavily-walled areas, so directions and narratives were garbled. When we asked if the pace could be slowed slightly, we were told that this speed was necessary to see two cities in one day. That is the problem - either the day needs to be much longer, or just concentrate on one city. We were unable to spend more than a few minutes at each site in Avila, barely long enough to take a couple photos. We had less than 10 minutes at the church/convent of St. Teresa, which was supposed to be a highlight of the trip, and the brief narrative totally missed the contributions of this amazing woman who continues to inspire the spiritual life of millions. We were allowed 15 minutes atop the historic walls of Avila. We finally gave up and did Segovia on our own in the afternoon after lunch, missing the Alcazar tour we had paid for because we couldn’t keep up. We met up with the group in time to catch the bus back to Madrid. We use tour groups extensively as we travel, we are used to walking tours and the inevitable challenges that can arise. However, we cannot recommend this tour. You would get more out of the day by taking the train to Avila and exploring at your own pace.

While we really enjoyed the cities, this was a combination Spanish/English tour and we were expecting an English only tour. Our guide's English was not very good and she was hard to understand. She spent much more time explaining in Spanish than she did in English.

Both Avila and Segovia were wonderful towns. But the tour experience was awful. Tour booking indicated Spanish OR English, actuality was both together, with a tour guide whose English was severely challenged. Spanish speakers got about three times as much air time, not sure what we missed. Tour was too large (50 persons) and poorly organized, resulting in significant wasted time. We were discouraged from leaving the tour to explore on our own, but found the checkpoints to have not been set optimally, resulting in even more time wastage.

It’s amazing to see these cities! Not for relaxed meandering though! We raced through and unfortunately our ticket info didn’t consistently match the actual entrances and admissions….so we weren’t able to see all that we hoped. Be prepared to race to keep up. Transportation is super on time and comfortable. Still glad we made the trip!

We booked this tour some months ago selecting the “English Speaking” option, this was also clarified on my booking, remember this for later! Received our booked tickets that did not show the drinks and tapas option we had selected and paid for, was told this option was no longer available and a refund would need to be provided!! Our tour guide was Marta, there were approximately 30 participants only 10 “English Speaking” the remainder Spanish speaking. The English narration certainly got less information than the Spanish, the worst part was the Spanish speaking group had a confronting argument with the tour guide complaining the tour was held up and late to return because of the need to translate everything into English. Not correct, time keeping by participants was an issue, we had slow people with mobility issues (one had a mobility walker some others walking sticks) it was more a seniors tour, the booked lunch also posed a problem as the large numbers could not be catered for quickly. We loved our visits to Avila and walls, Segovia and the Alcazar was amazing albeit rushed, they are an absolute must do but pick another tour company, sadly as our experience proved booking an English speaking tour is no guarantee! The whole arguing, shouting and confrontation that continued from lunch time for the rest of the day by badly behaved people absolutely spoilt the day, yes they booked a Spanish Speaking tour just as we had booked an English Speaking tour, say it and move on don’t keep going on! This was ultimately the worst tour I have ever taken (we travel all around the world), shame on you Julia Travel, its not all about making money, its about customer satisfaction and your paying guests feeling safe and receiving a tour they booked.

Our family loved this trip! We had plenty of time to explore each town. The kids enjoyed walking on the walls of Ávila, and we got great views and pictures. Segovia was amazing, we had time to have lunch on our own and explore the town for a little, then go on the tour of Alcazar. Jorge was an excellent guide, he was very knowledgeable and made a point to say everything in English as well as Spanish. He was super friendly and helpful. There was plenty of time for breaks and he waited for everyone to arrive before moving on, we never felt rushed. It was a long day and could have felt stressful but it worked seamlessly. I would definitely recommend this tour company.

The countryside is gorgeous, a must see! The Roman walls and aqueduct are incredible and the alcazar is picturesque. Jorge and Roberto were great, very friendly, informative, and patient!

Excellent trip through Avila and Segovia. The tour was informative and gave time to explore on our own as well. We had three children with us between 10-14 and they all enjoyed the tour.

Jorge was a pleasant and knowledgeable guide. We enjoyed the trips to both Avila and Segovia. Time, though, is relatively short for a thorough visit to both places. Yet, it provides a good start to visit both cities again in future.

LoraSenechal_C

The cities are unmissable, but I would travel with a different company. The bus had less leg room than an economy class airplane seat. But Roberto the driver was good, and Kathy was okay. She could add more historical detail and for sure, more attention to the walls of Avila, which are stunning and unique.
