Valley of the Fallen

Valley of the Fallen is a Francoist regime monument, Catholic basilica and a monumental memorial in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, erected at Cuelgamuros Valley in the Sierra de Guadarrama, near Madrid. Franco claimed that the monument was meant to be a "national act of atonement" and reconciliation. The construction works mainly involved free workers and a smaller, albeit significant, percentage of prisoners, these between 1942 and 1950, under the regime of redemption of sentences.

Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial

San Lorenzo de El Escorial, also known as El Escorial de Arriba is a town and municipality in the Community of Madrid, Spain, located to the northwest of the region in the southeastern side of the Sierra de Guadarrama, at the foot of Mount Abantos and Las Machotas, 47 kilometres (29 mi) from Madrid. It is head of the same name judicial party. The settlement is popularly called El Escorial de Arriba, to differentiate it from the neighbouring village of El Escorial, also known as El Escorial de Abajo. Felipe II ordered the construction of this Monastery in recognition of the victory of San Quintín, which took place on the day of San Lorenzo in 1557 and is from the King, to erect a mausoleum in memory of his parents and himself, placed under the invocation of Saint Lawrence.

The Escorial is a magnificent place. Isabel, our guide was excellent. Very cordial, respectful and knowledgeable. Cristina was also good but I had the impression that she was in a hurry. Valley of the Fallen is a small place that can be seen in 15-20 minutes, but it’s beautiful.

It was a great day! Christine was so knowledgeable and I learned so much! The library was amazing!! Enjoyed the entire monastery. Amazing view from Valley of the Fallen! Viator is the best! We use them wherever we are and they never disappoint!

The instructor was really good and very very nice , but the tour inside was too long, not fit for young kids , and We didnt get to see the garden at all and that was a shame cuz the garden is beautiful.

Cristina was a great guide. Well organized, with lots of information and knowledge. Bus ride was comfortable Highly recommend.

The tour guide was knowledgeable, professional and informative. We purchased a tour that was promoted as "English," but was actually BI-LINGUAL. This was a disappointment. Most of the tourists in our group were Spanish speaking and the guide appropriately delivered ALL of her commentary in BOTH languages. Questions asked in Spanish were answered in Spanish but were not translated to English as well. The bi-lingual nature of the trip took extra time away from non-Spanish tourists and all commentary was delivered in very fast speech. Both sites required a GREAT DEAL of rapid walking, challenging hilly streets and very tiring for us. I have said I would recommend this tour to a friend because it was so historic and interesting. I would however caution about the bilingual and strenuous walking.

Everything went on time the guide was excellent. Her name was Christina. The only thing I would say was that she was guiding in both Spanish and English both which she was fully competent however she was so busy it very little time for discussion with her and also it was limited how much knowledge she couldn’t part to us, as she had to repeat everything in Spanish. where it not for that I would have raised the trip five star

Good tour, both in English and in Spanish. We were accompanied by Cristina, which was a really nice tour guide, always eager to answer your questions. The only negative point in that the sound system during the El Escorial visit was not working good. Lots of noise and sometimes it just didn't work. Although Cristina tried her best to overcome this issue, it continued until the end of the visit.
