Acaia

A wall, a citadel and a castle make the Acaya complex the precious testimony of feudalism in Salento. A few kilometers from Lecce, near Vernole, stands the village of Acaya, formerly called Segine, embraced by mighty walls and a large moat. Considered one of the best examples of Renaissance defensive architecture in Terra d’Otranto, the Acaya Castle watches over the small village, guarding centuries of history. The fortified village, model of an ideal city that reveals since its conception the desire to combine the safety of the architecture with the industriousness of its people, Acaya has been for some time at the center of an important historical, artistic and cultural recovery action by of the Municipality of Vernole and the Province of Lecce.

Riserva Naturale Regionale e Oasi WWF dei Ghirardi

The Oasis is located within a Special Conservation Area (IT9150032) in the Municipality of Vernole (LE) and is also a Special Protection Area (SPA IT9150014).
