Puerto del Rosario

Let’s explore the capital! Absolutly! We go tho the National harbour and see the beauteful beach aswell... Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura. It is also the largest town and the economic heart of the island. Currently around 49,000 inhabitants. Puerto del Rosario is a late bloomer. Hence unfortunately no impressive historic city center with buildings from different eras. The fact that Puerto del Rosario has only developed late is because it has not always been the capital of Fuerteventura. It was not until the year 1835 that it took over this role from Betancuria. Officially, the year before Antigua was briefly the main city of the island. When Puerto del Rosario became the capital, it was still called Puerto de CabrasThe place was initially known as Puerto de Cabras or Puerto Cabras due to the historical presence of goats of these animals that grazed on its coastline. However in 1956, the municipal authorities requested its change to that of Puerto del Rosario.

Tefia

The Tefía Penitentiary Agricultural Colony was a concentration camp during the Franco dictatorship, located in the village of Tefía, belonging to the municipality of Puerto del Rosario on the island of Fuerteventura. Active between 1954 and 1966, it served for the confinement of common and political prisoners, and for the reeducation of male homosexuals. Here was also the first airport (airfield).

I have been on lots of different tours in different places but this was one of the very best. Firstly you are just in a small mini-bus that seats 8 people, which we shared with an Irish and a German family, making it much more personal and comfortable. This is only enhanced further by the amazing guide Andrew, whose knowledge of the island is second to none and I really enjoyed chatting with him at every opportunity. You get to see all the best sights the island has to offer including Popcorn Playa, Sotavento Beach, Ajuy Caves, Betancuria and El Cotillo. You spend just enough time at each one, which includes an amazing stop for lunch in Ajuy, and there are lots of amazing photo opportunities along the way. This is an absolute "must do" trip if you are visiting the beautiful Fuerteventura.

Pierre and his dog were great, we enjoyed the trip so much. We would recommend these two to anyone. We will never forget the sight of all those goats crossing the road in front of us. There is no question that Pierre doesn't know the answer for.
