It presents itself as a deep lagoon located in Serra Devassa, at the bottom of a volcanic crater. Its elevation above sea level is 334 meters. It is 700 meters long, 475 meters wide and 29 meters deep. It is surrounded by typical Macaronesian forests and Japanese cedar plantations.
The Lagoa das Sete Cidades is the largest natural reservoir of fresh surface water in the Azores, occupying a vast area that reaches 4.45 square kilometers, with a depth of 33 meters. It is characterized by the double color of its waters, being divided by a shallow channel, crossed by a low bridge that separates a mirror of green water on one side and, on the other, a mirror of blue tone. These characteristics, and the beauty of the surrounding landscape, gave rise to beautiful legends about its origin and formation, including the one that links it to the myth of Atlantis.
Miradouro da Ponta do Escalvado
At the viewpoint, about 150 meters above sea level, you can see Ferraria and the region of Mosteiros. It is said that, on clear days, you can see a little of Terceira Island and the top of the mountain on Pico Island.
