Your Itinerary

Glen Shiel

Our first stop is in the mountain pass of Glenshiel. A historic battle was fought here, not as you might expect between warring Highland Clans but between the British Red Coats and the Spanish who were in support of the Jacobite Rising of 1719. Today, it's one of the most beautiful mountain passes in Scotland.

Eilean Donan Castle

Located at the intersection of 3 sea lochs on a small tidal island is the most photographed castle in Scotland. It's interiors are as captivating as it is seen from outside. The castle is a popular location for films, TV, advertisements, fashion shoots and music videos.

Admission Not Included

Portree

We'll arrive in a small quaint town of Portree for lunch. Streets are lined with a variety of quirky local shops. A picturesque stretch of pastel colored houses by the harbour is a favorite photo spot for visitors and locals alike.

The Old Man of Storr

There are many folklore stories about the Old Man of Storr. One version points out to a giant who lived on the Trotternish Ridge. When he was laid to rest upon his death, his thumb—the “Old Man" remained partially above ground. Today, it is an iconic landmark arguably the most popular hike on Skye.

Quiraing

When the scenery gradually turns to be more surreal along the drive, thats when you know that you are close to your next destination - The Quirang. It was formed at the end of the ice age when a bed of solidified lava about 300m thick broke away and began to slip into the sea creating a 'land-before-time' landscape. It is a photographers, film makers and nature seekers haven. Like many other locations in Skye - The Quirang has been featured in blockbuster movies. Here's to many more.

Kilt Rock

What are the odds of seeing sea-cliffs that resembles pleats and even simulate colors of traditional Scottish kilt - about 180ft high. The Kilt Rock is another geological wonder with traces of dinosaur footprints. The landscape makes some unusual music of its own when strong winds blow described by many as hauntingly beautiful.

Fairy Pools

This is an option great for avid hikers. There's a 2.4km walk on gravel, peat, grass, heather and rocky path from the parking lot to the stunning waterfall it is famous for. Its location is somewhat off our usual route. If you prefer this option, time will not allow us to go all the way out to the Quiraing.

Yet another stellar follow up with John after spending the day before with him touring Speyside distilleries. I was excited to finally visit the Isle of Skye that so many folks rave about with its beauty. John outfitted one of our friends with a kilt, that turned into a thrift shopping experience later on to outfit all three men with their own kilts. The tour turned out to be yet another highlight of our trip and by in part because of John leading the way. We stopped at many of the must sees and a few unexpected ones along the way. The photos just don't do this amazing place justice. Thank you so much John and to Teri (the mastermind behind the scenes) for making this dream trip even better than I could have ever imagined!

We went on 2 tours with John and had a blast! He is so knowledgeable about Scotland's history both ancient and modern including clans. We'll be processing the information for quite some time. His sense of humor and personality made the days so much fun and so enjoyable. The views will blow you away, the shops are fun and the food delicious at various places. We highly recommend Aye Tours.

This review is long overdue, but better late than never. My wife and I hired John and Aye tours for two separate day tours in July 2023. From the beginning they (who we later learned was John's awesome wife Terry) were incredibly responsive and flexible. For example, I meant to book tour days back to back, and only later when I got an email confirmation did I realize that I had actually booked the tours for a Monday and then the following Tuesday 8 days later. One I realized, I emailed them and thankfully they were able to switch our days without any trouble. Additionally, any questions we had were answered promptly by email within 24 hours. For the actual tours, John was knowledgeable, entertaining, and went with the flow wonderfully. My wife was 6.5 months pregnant at the time and he was very patient with us, and easily adjusted the tours so she would be more comfortable and get the most out of them since she couldn't do many of the hikes. As a local, he knew the ins and outs of the hotspots and made sure to get us to places before the big bus tours when views and ambiance would be ruined. A big highlight of our trip was when John and Terry made it a point to find us some Highland cattle since they're my wife's favorite! They were able to get us up close and personal and my wife still talks about it to this day. A picture we took that day is hanging in our son's room as Hairy Coos is the decor theme for the nursery  We couldn't recommend Aye tours enough, and when we go back we'll make sure to hire John and Terry again.

John was an excellent guide, full of knowledge and was always entertaining. He had and endless supply of a scotch to warm our souls on a rainy day. The rain added to the charm of the tour though. Really liked the fact that you kind of control the itinerary of what you want the see in Skye and there is a LOT to see. The amazing scenery was magical other worldly. I would definitely recommend AYE tours, hopefully we’ll be back to Scotland in the near future to enjoy another tour with them.

John's tour to Skye was an absolute HIGHLIGHT! He was so knowledgeable, so enthusiastic, and so friendly; we were swept away on an epic Scottish adventure! We learned a little bit about everything and he was kind enough to guide us around every attraction himself. This was especially handy when he had secret spots to get the best views! After all the laughs, stories, and pictures we came home so happy and so tired (in a good way!). We will definitely be touring with John again!!

My husband and I haven’t stopped talking about how amazing our tour with John was. I actually felt sad when getting into bed last night realizing it was over. What an amazing experience in the most beautiful country with one of the only highlander tour guides out here. John is passionate, energetic, knowledgeable, funny, and caring. We almost booked one of those big bus tours and what a mistake that would’ve been. Having the ability to only cater to 4 of us was a blessing. There is so much to pack into one single day that doing it with more people honestly would have been a nightmare and likely would’ve led us to miss out on great things. We even thought of renting a car… after witnessing a tourist flip into a ditch, the wild winds and rain, and narrow roads (not to mention etiquette of knowing who has the right of way on these winding mountain roads) I’m so glad we didn’t try to navigate that. I would book this tour over and over again. What a day. Thank you to John and Teri for being so professional and accommodating.

I cannot adequately put into words how fantastic this tour was! John picked us up at our hotel and from the jump he had my wife and I laughing and in good spirits. John tailored the tour to our liking and provided fun and education throughout the entire trip! The Scottish highlands are an unforgettable experience in and of itself, but I can truly say the memories of this particular trip will last a lifetime because of John’s personality and willingness to make this trip so much fun! He’s a proud Highlander, but an even more down to earth guy when you just shoot the bull with him. Cannot recommend him enough. Spend a little extra with John and never regret it!

We did our Isle of Skye tour with John, our tour guide. It was an amazingly fun and enjoyable tour we’ve had. John was a fantastic tour guide full of knowledge of the Scottish highlands and he brought us to all the magical places we wanted to see in the isle of skye. Highly recommended.

John was fantastic! He has so much energy and was really entertaining the entire time! We learned so much about Scottish Highlander history and culture! This tour was our favorite part of the entire trip! John was also thoughtful about timing and avoiding crowds. We are so glad we spent the extra money and got John instead of a generic cheaper tour. John is the guy to hire!

We spent two full days with John on the “Isle of Skye” and “Culloden, Loch Ness, and more” tours. Both tours were excellent and John is a perfect Highlands host. He is very flexible and full of stories and history of the area. John makes you feel very comfortable and confident in the tours provided. He is an excellent driver. We also appreciated his insight into Scotch whisky and tastings. He may have made Scotch drinkers of us. We feel lucky to have spent two days with him getting to know the Highlands and highly recommend Aye Tours Scotland for any of their tours.
