La Canebiere was built in the 17th century as part of a major expansion of the city. It takes its name from the hemp rope factory that was located here (sapebier or hemp in Provençal). La Canebiere has long been the main thoroughfare and the most fashionable street in the city, with the best cafes, cinemas and stores (nowadays the tourist emphasis has shifted more to the Old Port area). Several important museums are located on this street, as well as the famous and visited Lonshan Palace with its outstanding cascading fountain.
