Amalfi

Amalfi is an Italian town of 4 853 inhabitants in the province of Salerno in Campania. A thriving maritime republic in the early Middle Ages (together with Genoa, Pisa and Venice), it is also known for having given its name to the Amalfi Tables, a maritime code used throughout the Mediterranean area from the 12th to the 16th century. In 1997 the Amalfi Coast, of which Amalfi is the main geographical and historical center, was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its foundation is traced back to the Romans (its coat of arms bears the inscription Descendit ex patribus romanorum), even if, for the toponymic Giovanni Alessio it could be even earlier, to the Aegean navigators in an epoch prior to Magna Graecia. From the ninth century it became the first Italian maritime republic, thanks to its inaccessible position on the Amalfi cliff and entered into competition with Pisa, Venice and Genoa.

Positano

Positano is a small paradise located on the Amalfi Coast, a village of a thousand shades, you will have 2 hours to visit it by booking this lovely experience. About 30 minutes sailing time to Amalfi

I was weary as there was only one review for this excursion. I don’t usually trust tours without reviews, so I figured I would help out the next person trying to make a decision and might be overwhelmed like I was. On piece of advice for Amalfi in general: When in doubt, be assertive and ask questions. Things to know. We were in Amalfi end of May 2023. It was beginning of busy season, so be prepared for the crowds. PROS: We only had 3 days in Amalfi so we didn’t have much time to thoroughly visit all of the Amalfi towns. This gives you a nice taste of a couple of them and a nice cruise along the water which is much better than driving along the coast. Some of the other tours only do an hour in each town. 2 hours is much better. CONS: There were NOT “up to 99 people” on this tour as advertised. Perhaps on the way there in the AM, but on the way back, my guess was 250 people. It was difficult to find a seat for three of us. My guess is the boat acts more as a ferry and will keep selling tickets to one-way passengers. I had trouble finding where to pick up my vouchers. On the original post, it said ticket office 6. Which I found a small #6 but the window was closed to what looked like construction or abandonment. I asked a few people and finally found a small stand to get my ticket. I recommend to the tour company, that if the location changes, that an update be sent the day before. I arrived 25 minutes before and felt a little panicked as I was running around looking for the stand. As advertised it said it was visiting Amalfi first and then Positano. Not a big deal, but again, different than advertised. TIPS We were told to go to dock #3. Dock #3 was boarding 10:00. We had 10:10. Turns out they were boarding from dock #2 (so be sure to ask questions). We saw this happen the next day as well. What boat pulls into what dock seems loosie goosy. Just a tip: We had the same boat and the same crew take us to each spot. Memorize the name of the boat. People will line up 20-30 minutes before the boat loads up at each port. If you aren’t particular about getting a seat up top or by the window, spend some more time enjoying the town and not in a crush of people. You have an assigned time and boat. Head to the dock 5 minutes before departure time. Wait till the boat starts loading. There will be people squishing on the dock early for the next timed boat. Either walk through the exit instead of the entrance or push through and say “private tour.” And walk on last. Then you deal less with the crowd and more time in port.
