Centro Storico di Sulmona

Sulmona, called 'the prettiest city in Abruzzo' often takes first-time visitors by surprise. Its beauty and harmony create a sense of visual pleasure that makes one feel part of a secret club. The principal city of the Valle Peligna, Sulmona occupies a flat, lozenge-shaped area surrounded by majestic mountains that display every colour of every season and sits between two awesome National Parks.

Sulmona

There is surely plenty to see while in Sulmona. We suggest to focus on the points below: - The Medieval aqueduct ,built in 1256 to transport water from the Gizio river to workshops in the city or to mills. It is an example of great medieval engineering for its structure and complexity. Composed of 21 pointed arches, it also includes a plaque with an epigraph. - Church of Santa Maria della Tomba located in Piazza del Plebiscito. Built in 1076 on top of a Roman temple, the Church has fascinating Romanesque and Gothic ornaments. The church bell tower was rearranged in the 1800s due to the damage caused by the 1706 earthquake and was embellished with a clock. Inside you can also admire the terracotta statue of the Madonna and Child. - The complex of the Santissima Annunziata is probably the most representative monument of the city of Sulmona and therefore deserves a thorough visit. - Confetti shops: Sulmona is well-known for the production of Confetti. There are many shops scattered around the historic center of the city where it is possible to taste and purchase this delicacy.

Pacentro

Tiny medieval village, 10 minutes from Sulmona. Visit the old part, made of narrow alleys that climb up to the castle. You can see it from afar, with the bell tower and those of the fortress that stand tall. According to legend, Pacentro was founded by Pacinus, the Trojan hero who after leaving Aeneas on the banks of the Tiber reached Mount Morrone and gave birth to this center here.
