I reviewed Maui Sunrider’s web site and what they said about waiting until a bit later was great advice. We ended up driving ourselves up to see the sunrise, spent time on the crater and still had more than enough time to get to Maui Sunriders for their ride to the starting point for the bike ride. Driver did a great job educating us on the way up to the starting point and because we waited until after the sunrise we could see what he was referring to. The bikes and equipment were good and we had a wonderful time coming down the mountain at our own pace and stopping where and when we wanted to. Very much recommend doing this type of bike tour down the mountain

My family and I took the self guided tour starting at 4:30am. There was no microphone in the van, so my family, who was sitting in the back of the vehicle, couldn’t hear the instructions about the course directions back to base. Our group of 7 was separated into 2 parties with all members lost. The “guides” denied my request to pick us up, stating they were waiting for the next tour. The guides were at the base when we finally arrived. Recommendations for the tour company: microphones in vans, do not offer self guided options for sunrise tours.

Our group was 9 and arrived on time to the meet up location. We were there before the owner arrived. This meant we had to rush through getting jackets, coffee and "breakfast" - if you count an oatmeal bar as breakfast. Also the use of the Keurig coffee machine had me concerned from the get go... So we are driving up the mountain, a few miles in when John, the owner, tell us that this tour no longer goes into the park, into the very top of the mountain due to changes in park entry rules. (Later we research that you merely have to buy a pass per vehicle in advance to enter the park). At first he tell us this and I think no big deal, but you'll realize that this tour doesn't take you up high enough at all. Don't expect to see the sunrise over the clouds on this one. Biggest concern now is Safety. Now that we have been brought up to the top of the mountain we see the bikes for the first time. They had definitely seen better days. Several people in our group felt that the breaks were a little "loose". I am very glad to that he provided us with very large, motorcycle style helmets as they proved to useful later in the trip... Owner knew but did not warn us to not ride on sidewalks which caused one of our riders to ride off a 6ft stair gap very very close to the end of the ride. He suffered a major scrape on his arm and knee. He was very lucky to have walked away without more injuries. In future, I'd pay more for the other tours - it's likely more worth it.

We originally opted for a self paced tour, however after speaking with guides and explaining my many fears, it was recommended we take the guided tour and was much safer. I was the first in the peloton and the guide coached me around and down each and every turn of the way. We had fun and enjoyed our day. It was worth getting out of bed at 2:30 am. We paid the tour guide to pick us up outside the pier to avoid calling an Uber for 3:00 am.

The services was very personalized and the assistance on the road Exceptional, the tour started at the entrance of the park not the submit.

This tour was a disappointment and a complete joke. It’s advertised as driving up the mountain and biking down after seeing the sunrise. We get in the van and Jack, our driver, informs us that we won’t see the sun, and that it’ll be on the other side of the mountain. We make it up to a drop off spot where he explains that people who don’t have a permit have to stop here. We were 3,000 ft below the top of Haleakala. The photo on the websites all show a sunrise photo from the top and it says sunrise in the title. It’s completely false advertising. Jack started to unload the bikes, which were incredibly old and all needed repairs. He flippantly said “check your brakes before you go down”, and someone not in our group said, “shouldn’t that be your job?” No one in my group trusted the brakes because they all squeaked and some people had a hard time going into some of the turns as a result. One person in our group was given a bike with a flat tire, and we were also given motorcycle helmets that were too big. When my friend called their office to express our disappointment and ask for a partial refund, she spoke with Jack. Jack proceeded to yell at her on the phone and say that she got what she paid for and began making racist and bigoted statements about wanting our money back. We never got a refund and would not recommend this tour to anyone. You could drive to the drop off spot we did yourself for free.

We were under the impression we'd be able to see the sunrise from the top of the summit, however we were taken to a place that was 2000ft down from the summit. So, not only could we not see the sunrise due to the trees and the sun being on the other side of the mountain but the guy engaged us in a long speech with our backs turned away from what little bit of the sunrise we could see.

Hey gang, evidently I didn't read the fine print. Fact, you see no sunrise on the bike. Dropped off at 6500 feet outside the park, wrong side of the mountain to see the sun come up. Not sure how it's called such a tour other than the fact you get up at 3:00am to find a little shop in the dark, and get shuttled 1/2 way up. Tour guide is enthusiastic if you want a guided tour. Condition of the bikes, scary at speed..shake, rattle, and roll. (it is all downhill.) We completed our ride at 7:30am, returned to a shop that no one was at. Dropped the bikes, helmets, and hung a jacket on the door. All fine if you just want a bike ride.. Evidently only 140 people are permitted to the summit daily (or so we were told for the sunrise)... I turned around and drove my rental car to the summit for the view I thought we were paying for... Live and learn, we were not alone in our dissatisfaction.

This was a fun bike ride down the volcano. If it was advertised as an early morning bike ride, then I wouldn’t have a problem. This was described as a “sunrise” ride (with a picture of the rising sun in the ad). But we were dropped off at 7000 foot elevation (3/4 of the way to the top) on the opposite side of the mountain (West side)from the sunrise. That means, we could not see the sunrise! Very misleading. There was no “tour” on the way up, in fact, the driver was on his phone most of the time. I guess you get what you pay for. This was definitely the least expensive company out there.
