Cromeleque dos Almendres

Our meeting point for this excursion will be the Roman Temple of Évora. From there, we will embark on a short 25-minute drive to reach the Menir of Almendres. This impressive solitary standing stone, approximately 4 meters in height, holds significance as a prehistoric ritual site. Next, we will proceed to the nearby Cromlech of Almendres, situated just a few minutes away by van. Often referred to as the Stonehenge of Portugal, this extraordinary site features two concentric circles formed by standing stones. You will learn about the history of this spectacular site from archaeologists specializing in the prehistory of this region. You will also have some free time to explore the site.

Centro Interpretativo dos Almendres

As we leave Almendres, we will make a stop at the interpretive centre/gift shop.

Anta Grande do Zambujeiro

We will regroup and embark on a 25-minute drive to our next destination, the Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro (Anta Grande do Zambujeiro), a remarkable prehistoric burial site. Notably larger than other existing dolmens, this site holds great intrigue. We will delve into the archaeological discoveries made here. Our return journey to Évora will commence thereafter, with drop-offs scheduled for around 12:00pm, conveniently timed for a delightful lunch in the city.

The tour of the monolith, megalith and Dolman sites was amazing. We felt privileged to have a private tour for the six of us with such knowledgable archaeologists! We learned so much that day. Thank you, Bianca and Gonzalo for patiently answering all our questions and teaching us about life 7000 years ago!!

This tour is either one of the best, or the very best, activity we have done on our 2 week Portugal holiday. I strongly recommend it. Our tour guides had such thorough knowledge of the subject they were able to provide really interesting answers to our questions. It is true one of the sites has a fence around it for conservation work, but this did not affect our experience. Communication was always responsive and pick-up arrangements and easy - we opted for meeting at the Roman Temple monument, as we were staying in a narrow street in the old town. We’re so glad we found this tour on TripAdvisor! Thank you to our guides!

This tour is an excellent way to begin to understand this period of prehistory. The area around Évora is rich in prehistoric sites. If you are interested in this period it is well worth visiting these three sites with Bianca and Gonçalo because they can explain so much about them.

We enjoyed the enthusiasm, insght and opinion of our very personable guides. They were highly knowledgeable about the pre-historic and neo-lithic periods as well as specifics of the Iberian Peninsula's finds. Not dry and boring, they put life into the life and times of this period.

Bianca and her partner Gonzalo were friendly and knowledgeable. Furthermore, and contrary to too many guides, they didn’t try to talk or expose literally all the time. Some moments of silence, mixed with key pedagogical informations at the right time, is the right way to go. And they understood that.

Friendly, knowledgeable guides! Saw a lot (went to 3 sites - each very unique), and learned a lot about the history of the area, how the megaliths were discovered, theories on what they mean. Loved the excursion. Would highly recommend!

Archaeologists Bianca and Goncalo are outstanding guides who brought us to three Neolithic structures dating back more than 6,000 years. We walked along a path aligned with beautiful wildflowers amidst a field of cork trees to reach the site of the Menhir Dos Almendres, an enormous single standing stone. It was an exhilarating experience to see the two stone circles of the Cromlech of Alemendres. The Dolmen of Zambujeiro, an enormous single chamber tomb, was a truly impressive monument. At all three megalithic sites, Bianca and Goncalo passionately conveyed their scientific and cultural knowledge of the Neolithic period.

We highly recommend this tour. We had a wonderful morning exploring the megaliths near Evora. The archaeologists explained the background to the sites with knowledgeable enthusiasm. There was plenty of time to take photos and ask questions. Safe driving and comfortable. The tour goes through beautiful countryside.

We can’t say enough about this tour and the two knowledgable leaders. They are archeologists with a passion for the area and the megaliths. We all learned so much and enjoyed their easy and friendly way of teaching. HIGHLY recommend!
