    We took a long time to decide on a tour through the Ria Formosa because we wanted to be sure we would have time to stop and observe the bird/wild life and not just be rushing past and were so happy with our choice of the bird watching walking tour with Louis and PurNatur. We learnt so much about the area and the different bird and sea life, and flowers/plants of the region. Louis also had binoculars and a telescopic lens so that we could see the birds up close. Fantastic day out and would highly recommend this experience.

    We first did this tour with Luis 6 years ago, and enjoyed it so much, it was top of our list of things to do again on this return trip. The tour begins in the minibus, with background information about the Ria Formosa to set the scene before arrival. Our tour was Birdwatching, and we saw at least 30 species, along with reptiles and plants. The walk incorporates varied habitats, the salt pans, woodland and a golf course, so there was a great selection of birds. Luis focuses his powerful scope on each bird, so you will see it very clearly, as he describes its behaviour. The walk is flat, easy terrain, with lots of stops. Very enjoyable, and definitely recommended.

    First time ever on a bird watching/nature tour and I AM SO GLAD WE DID THIS! Not only was our guide, Louiz (sp?) a wealth of knowledge on the bio of the area, he was an enthusiast for preserving nature and volunteers to help do so in many ways. He answered all our questions and told us things you just won't find on Google. He spoke English very well and made sure we enjoyed our handful of hours touring the area. We also got plenty of steps in that day which helps because Portugal has SO MANY great restaurants and food options.

    Visited in late March 2024 with a small group. Our guide Lus was friendly and very knowledgable about the local area, history and traditions. He identified the birds and plants we saw on our leisurely 2.5 hour walk around the reserve through pine woodland and out onto the coastal salt marshes and sand dunes. A very enjoyable and interesting trip for anyone interested in wildlife and the environment. Would highly recommend.

    We feel like we escaped to paradise with Luis from PerNatur on his Ria Formosa Nature Park walk. He picked us up at our accommodation in Olhao in a comfortable and clean van. He has a vast knowledge of birds that he shared with us. Providing us with binoculars and a telescope so we could examine the birds up closely. This was an unforgettable travel experience with a local guide that loves to show and tell you about this fantastic area of the Algarve. Thank you so much Luís.

    Ria Formosa Natural Park

    After we have picked you up from your accommodation, we drive to the Ria Formosa Nature Park restricted area of Quinta de Marim, which functions as the headquarters of the Nature Park. Then you get to enjoy a pleasant and easy walk of roughly 6 km passing through several habitats existing in this wetlands system like a pine forest, dunes, Mediterranean shrublands, lagoons, sandbanks and intertidal mudflats. You will be amazed by the outstanding views and landscapes of the lagoons, islands and intricated channels. In this half day walk you will discover many native flowers and plants of this region, and experience some of its fragrancies and tastes. Observe several species of birds, some crustaceous, butterflies and dragonflies. Find out about local mammals and reptiles. You will also have the opportunity to visit the nature exhibitions at the Ria Formosa Nature Park headquarters. Learn how the layers of civilization have always relied on the Ria Formosa as a life support provider.
