Moving on we stop to admire one of the finest examples of north German, neo-gothic architecture, and witness the devastation caused by Allied bombing raids in WWII.
Trostbrucke
As we continue into the heart of the medieval city we cross one of Hamburg’s myriad canals using the oldest bridge in the city.
Speicherstadt
Next we explore the city’s first UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site and the largest warehouse district in the world.
Elbphilharmonie
We then stand under the eaves of Hamburg’s state-of-the-art concert hall – a true modern architectural gem and one of the most acoustically advanced concert halls on the planet.
Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial
After a short break you will then be driven to the remains of the largest network of concentration camps in the north of Nazi Germany. The drive takes between 45 minutes and one hour. Entering the main camp we will witness the awful conditions in which prisoners lived during their internment. Next we see the nerve center of the camp’s SS guards. At House of Remembrance we pay tribute to those who perished in Neuengamme, their names adorning white fabric banners in this poignant memorial space.
