San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

-We will make the hike to the top of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe! Expect to spend approximately 2 hours hiking to the top and back. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. -Located just off the shore along the Bay of Biscay and 35 km (22 miles) east from Bilbao, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a definite “must” if you are visiting the Basque Country. Many will recognize San Juan de Gaztelugatxe as the island fortress of “Dragonstone” from season 7 of Game of Thrones, however, its real name can be translated as “castle rock” from Basque (“gaztelu” = castle + “aitz” = rock). -The island is connected to the mainland by a man-made stone bridge. The bridge transitions into a narrow path that contains 241 steps and zigzags its way back and forth to the top. These steps have even been recognized as one of the world’s grandest staircases.

Bermeo

Bermeo is a colorful coastal village located in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve and is less than 10 km away from the impressive San Juan de Gaztelugatxe island. Famous for its fishing tradition, it is a great place to stop for a while and explore. We will enjoy some pintxos/tapas at the marina, and for a leisurely stroll through the scenic old fishing port.

The best morning and lunch ever! The hike was fabulous but the real gift was spending time with Irene and learning about the Basque, their traditions, passions and what it means to be Basque!! Thank you for your positive energy and enthusiasm.

We spent the day with Irene touring the coast north of Bilbao. We had a great morning capped off with some pintxo and wine in a cute little fishing village. Touring with a local like Irene makes all the difference when you really want to understand the local way of life. I absolutely recommend to others.

We had such a great experience with our tour guide Zach! From the get go he was amazing with us, collecting us from our hotel and filling us in on so much of the history and culture of bilbao as well as every town we passed through on the way to the hike. The hike itself was spectacular! He chose the perfect time to bring us and had so much knowledge on the history of the monestary. He also brought us to a great spot for pintxo in bermeo and let us explore the hidden gem that was the fishing town. Overall it was a great day out and I would recommend it to anyone!

Booked a last minute trip to Bilbao & San Sebastián with my husband and fortunately we were accommodated despite nothing being available for at least a month on TripAdvisor! The views were amazing and the pintxos/wine in Bermeo were some of our favorites. My husband and I spent 3 days with Zach including the hike to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe as well as one day visiting the beautiful towns between Bilbao and San Sebastian and another day visiting the towns between San Sebastian and Biarritz. Zach put together wonderful itineraries for us that included tons of history, great land and seascapes and marvelous lunch spots with delicious local food and wine. He is very knowledgeable about the Basque Country and a joy to be with! You get so much more being with a guide that knows the area than you every would on your own. We would highly recommend any tour with Zach.

This tour was amazing! We did the hike to Gaztelugatxe and the fishing village. Irene made the trip feel like going with a friend but with door to door service and great knowledge and stories of the area. The views were spectacular and Irene took us to a small Beautiful fishing village where no tourists go! We would have done more tours with them if we had the time and definitely will if we can come back!
