Igreja e Convento de Sao Francisco

Interpretation of the work, rich in carving and tile decoration that transformed the sober Franciscan temple into a church in Baroque style.

Zona de Couros

The Zona de Couros is a very valuable cultural heritage of Guimarães. The medieval art of working leather had been developed in Guimarães since time immemorial, outside the city walls, as it was a very unhealthy, polluting and smelly industry.

According to tradition, an image of the Virgin Mary was brought to Guimarães by the apostle S. Tiago, and placed in a pagan Temple in a square that came to be called Praça de S. Tiago.

Parque do Castelo e Paco dos Duques de Braganca

The imposing castle of Guimarães was built by the Countess Mumadona Dias, the most powerful woman in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula in the 10th century. The Palace of the Dukes of Bragança was built in 1420 by Afonso, the illegitimate son of King João I, and the future Duke of Bragança, being one of the few palaces of its kind in Portugal.
