Icy Strait

Icy Strait is a legendary body of water that connects the protected inside waters of Southeast Alaska to the open Pacific Ocean. The nutrient rich waters of Southeast Alaska make it one of the most productive ecosystems in the world. During the summer months, these abundant fjords become the ideal home and feeding ground for a large population of Humpback Whales. Humpbacks travel to the area every year after their winter breeding season in the warmer waters of Hawaii and Mexico. After navigating over 3000 miles, we often see the same individual humpbacks return to Icy Strait year after year. Humpbacks aren’t the only wildlife in the area. Our trips often encounter Sea Lions, Seals, Porpoise, Sea Otters, Bald Eagles, Coastal Brown Bears along the shoreline, & our favorite – the awe inspiring Orca better known as the Killer Whale.

Hoonah

On the day of your tour, we will meet you at your cruise ship port and then transport you through the town of Hoonah to the local harbor where our whale watching vessel is docked. Our brief van ride offers beautiful views of Port Frederick and the surrounding landscape. Occasionally, we'll even see wildlife (including Eagles) on our ride to the vessel. After your time on the water, we will transport you back to your cruise ship docking area. The time spent in van between our vessel and your port is approximately 5 minutes.

We had a great time on our whale-watching tour with Capt. Seth! His multihull boat was super smooth even in choppier water, and the kids loved the cookies, chips, and extra tasty hot chocolate on the way. We must have seen 12+ whales at one time out at Point Adolphus, along with a group of sea lions that “leap-frogged” their way across the bay to shore, several cute sea otters, and more. This is an excellent semi-private tour for groups up to 6. We got way more time out on the water than the other tours we saw available that day - a great value for the money. Would happily go again next time we’re in the area!

Our tour with Captain Seth was a high point of our cruise. He was ready at the Excursion Hub earlier than scheduled, and got us on our way as soon as everyone was accounted for. We saw a whale almost as soon as we exited the harbor, and spent some time with what he called a "starter" whale, but rather than chase it, we set off for the area whales were seen earlier that day. During the trip out, you can dial your own excitement level, from warm and tame in the cabin to windy and chilly out in the spray. Important: Bring warm clothes if you want to see the whales from outside the cabin. We got up close with several whales during the tour because Seth is highly skilled at spotting, and then positioning the boat to maximize the time. Rough seas (5-6 feet) made the time a true Alaskan adventure! Seth got us back to the pier with plenty of time for a little shopping before getting back on the ship. The Icy Strait Point cruise piers are a little confusing to navigate, but follow the excellent instructions and you'll be fine. We had a great time, and won't hesitate to book again. Seth our captain was great. We got to see lots of whales, a sea lion, several seals and bald eagles. The boat was great and just being a small group was much more personal than the large tours we saw. We had a great day.

Seth was a wonderful tour guide. Super knowledgeable about the wildlife and eager to point them out while cruising the water! We were able to see humpback whales, seals, sea lions, otters, and bald eagles! I have to say my favorite part was when the 6 of us on board were given the option to go find orcas and it ended up being a successful search due to his buddies on the radio. There was also hot chocolate, water, and a wide variety of chips complimentary with the tour! 1000% recommend this tour! I’d love to take this tour again on my next trip to Icy Strait Point.

Seth was an excellent guide! We loved every minute of our excursion on his boat. We saw a lot of humpback whales, a sea otter, sea lions right by the boat and eagles. There were only 4 of us on the tour, so we had room to get around and take great pictures. I would highly recommand booking with Vivid Endeavors!

My family had an awesome time on this whale-watching tour! We saw so many humpback whales and bald eagles—it was incredible. The smaller boat and group size were perfect and made the trip feel really special. Plus, the longer time on the water compared to other tours was a huge bonus. The boat was comfy, and our guide was super knowledgeable and friendly.

This was a great experience. We had the whole boat to ourselves. The captain was very knowledgeable and succeeded in finding whales and other wildlife. Really, really enjoyed!! If I am ever in Alaska again, I would definitely book this excursion again!

We had the most incredible whale watching trip at Icy Strait Point! We were part of a really nice small tour of only 4 guests. The boat was perfect and the weather couldn't have been nicer. We saw a pod of 17 Humpback whales bubble-net feeding at really close range. It was AMAZING!!! It was one of the most impressive experiences of my life! We also saw dozens of sea otters (and pups) and lots of bald eagles. I highly recommend this tour in this gorgeous place!

My Wife, Sister-in-Law and I went on a 3.5 hour whale watching tour on June 11th, 2024, with Captain Seth. We had the greatest whale watching tour that you can imagine. We saw a bear, sea otters, sea lions and tons of whales. One whale breached 3 feet from the boat! AMAZING! Captain Seth's boat only holds 6 passengers, so it is a more intimate experience than a larger vessel with 12 or more people. After being on a cruise land tour for a week and being on a cruise ship for 3 days, it was a blessing to get out on the water with a just a few other people. My Wife, Sister-in-Law and I would not hesitate in booking another whale watching boat tour with Captain Seth! It was an experience of a lifetime for us!

Our family of 5 had a great time on this trip! Seth was very knowledgeable and his boat was perfect for enjoying a great excursion. We saw a lot of humpback whales, otters, and puffins. Highly recommend going with Seth. Our favorite excursion in Alaska!
