Ricco di storia e tradizioni eno-gastronomiche, a pochi chilometri da Sondrio si trova il paese di Chiuro, immerso nella natura, dominato dai frutteti e dai vigneti che con i loro suggestivi terrazzamenti rendono unico il paesaggio della media Valtellina. Chiuro vanta un ricco passato, le cui numerose tracce impreziosiscono ancor oggi il centro storico: dal Santuario della Madonna della Neve e di S. Carlo al palazzo fortificato di Stefano Milite Quadrio, dalla chiesa parrocchiale dei Santi Giacomo e Andrea, alla casa di Maurizio Quadrio, il grande patriota del Risorgimento. Il nome del paese appare per la prima volta in documenti del X secolo, ma le sue origini si perdono in epoca preistorica, come testimoniano i reperti trovati nella frazione di Castionetto. Data la sua posizione di passaggio per l'attraversamento della Valle, Chiuro giocò spesso un ruolo da protagonista nel panorama storico valtellinese, in particolare nel XV secolo, periodo molto fiorente grazie all'operato di Stefano Quadrio, il feudatario e condottiero che ottenne dal duca di Milano l'ampliamento dei propri feudi ed esenzioni tributarie per aver contribuito a respingere il tentativo veneziano di occupare la Valtellina. Fino a pochi decenni fa, il paese fondava la sua economia principalmente sulla coltivazione di mele e dell'uva da vino. Oggi, oltre che per le attività agricole - la maggior parte della zona è a denominazione d'origine controllata. Chiuro si contraddistingue anche per la produzione lattiero-casearia locale e per una propria tradizione artigianale legata alla lavorazione del legno e del ferro, alla manifattura edilizia e alla confezione dei pezzotti valtellinesi, i caratteristici tappeti rustici. Circondato dalle montagne, con un'altitudine che passa dai 349 ai 3248 metri s.l.m., Chiuro è inoltre un ideale punto di partenza per escursioni e passeggiate, offrendo al visitatore la possibilità di un turismo attento alle preziosità naturalistiche oltre che all'insegna della tradizione eno-gastronomica.
