From the courtyard take a short stroll to the viewing platform where you can admire panoramic views of Windermere through coloured panels the way Victorian way. Take in views to both the north and south of Lake Windermere. Listen out for the Aeolian wind harp on a blustery day and learn about the building’s colourful history.
Tarn Hows
A beauty spot that must not be missed, yet is not entirely typical of the local landscape, for the tarn is partly artificial, being three tarns joined together in the 19th Century and most of the trees surrounding it are conifers. The attraction is its sheer beauty, surrounded by thick woodland, and views towards Wetherlam, the Helvellyn range and the Langdale Pikes.
Hardknott Roman Fort
Follow in the footsteps of the Romans at Hardknott Fort, an archeological site. Remains of the Roman fort Mediobogdum is located on the western side of the Hardknott Pass. From the remains of the bath house at Ravenglass, the road went east to Hardknott, and from there it descended to the shores of Lake Windermere.
Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway
Opened in 1875 originally to bring iron ore from Eskdale to the Furness Railway at Ravenglass. Journey from Dalegarth, past seven request stops with a gradient of 1:40 at times, through the hills, across the estuary to your final destination of Ravenglass, the only coastal village in the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Lake District National Park.
Muncaster Castle
Learn about the historical importance of Muncaster Castle, a privately owned castle overlooking the River Esk, about a mile east of the west-coastal town of Ravenglass. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. The lands have been owned by the Pennington family for more than 800 years.
