Our tour of the Arroios neighborhood with Joao (aka Jonny) was fun, informative, and most of all delicious! We sampled food with roots in Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique and Goa. We particularly enjoyed eating in small, family-owned restaurants that we never would have found on our own. The highlight was an introduction to Cachupa, the national dish of Cape Verde. Muito Gostoso!

It was our family's favorite day in Lisbon. We had Kika as our guide, her history lesson was interesting to listen to, and she took excellent care of our group of a wide range of ages. My toddler loved her and stayed by her for most of the tour. As for the tour, we specifically loved that it focuses on the blend of culture and background between Portugal and its colonial influence. If you're interested in human migration and diaspora and also enjoy good food, this is the tour!!!

We had such an amazing tasting tour of Lisbon with the most adorable young woman Laura. I had booked this tour for 6 girlfriends thinking it would be 2 - 3 hours. Laura took us around to amazing places for 7 hours! We loved every minute of it. She gave us so much history, took us to really authentic places, knew people everywhere we went and was wonderful. We wanted her to stay with us for our entire trip. I highly recommend Laura and Culinary Backstreets!

Every Culinary Backstreet Walk I’ve taken has been a fantastic learning experience and Kika upheld the high quality of these experiences. Her knowledge of the food and its historical and cultural path to Lisbon was extensive, interesting, and well presented. And of course the food was delicious. Kika is a personable leader who makes all participants at ease. This tour is highly recommended!

What an amazing trip around the history of Lisbon and Portugal through a culinary experience. Not only did I learn new things about Portugal, but I got the opportunity to learn a richer experience of the food that is infused in the city through its heritage with other cultures. Kika was an amazing guide and host as she introduced us to each new venue with a powerful explanation of its relationship to the history of Portugal. A fantastic experience and one I will repeat for sure!

We were really interested in the colonial culinary history of Lisbon and Kika really delivered. It was very interesting tour where we learned a lot and enjoyed a lot of varied food. Kika is very well informed, interesting and helpful. It felt as if we spent the day hanging out with a friend in Lisbon. Highly recommended!

A wonderful tour of a wonderful city! Kika not only introduced me to Lisbon's diverse food scene but tied the development of Portugal's food culture to its history. She was incredibly knowledgeable and even provided recipes and recommendations beyond the tour. The food was delicious, and I learned so much!

Our guide Kika was warm and engaging. She made Lisbon come alive and introduced us to owners of small restaurants that served amazing foods. We came away with full stomachs and new knowledge. As my title suggests we left feeling like we made a great friend and we were treated like family. Do yourself a favor and book any tour led by the amazing Kika. This was our 3rd Culinary Backstreets tour. Always a great experience. Highly recommended !

We were led by Kika who did an excellent job weaving the history of Portuguese colonialism with the different neighborhoods and cuisines. It was an unusual and anthropological take on food in Lisbon.

This was a highlight of our visit to Lisbon. The post-colonial feast tour is a fascinating insight into how the history of Portugal's colonisation, and associated spice trade, is captured through the food map of the modern country. Celia is an excellent host, knowledgeable, generous and great company. You will visit neighorhoods away from the tourist trails and visit restaurants you might otherwise walk straight past. The owners are pleased to see you and happy to explain their kitchen histories. Don't miss these tours.
