What to expect
Strand
The Strand can lay more than one claim to fame with regard to illumination. The Savoy Theatre was the first public building in the world to be permanently lit by electricity, and the Victoria Embankment had the world's first ever street lights. The Strand didn't actually have Christmas lights until 2015, but since then, stretching from the world famous Trafalgar Square Christmas tree to the beautiful St Mary le Strand Church, they have been extremely popular.
Regent Street
This year marks the 200th anniversary of this famous London street. The street is well worth a visit at any time of year, providing a wide variety of engaging shopping, dining and wellness experiences. At Christmas time, Regent Street can boast London's largest lights installation, and is renowned for its beautiful “Spirit of Christmas” lights. These delightful suspended spirits are based on Regent Street's first ever Christmas lights in 1954.
Oxford Street
Another of London’s famous shopping streets provides another of its most attractive Christmas light displays. Oxford Street's high-street fashion and exclusive designer stores draw shoppers in their droves throughout the year, but the vast array of extravagant festive decorations make it even more popular at Christmas time.
Carnaby Street
In the past, Carnaby Street has delivered some of the city's most original and eye-catching Christmas light installations. Last year saw the lyrics of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody illuminated above the street, and this year's installation is sure to be just as memorable. The Carnaby Christmas usually includes special events and discounts in local bars, shops and restaurants.
Covent Garden
The cobbled square and quaint market buildings are even more attractive at Christmas time. The theme for this year's Christmas light display has yet to be confirmed, but you can expect to see an enormous hand-picked Christmas tree draped in lights and an impressive silver reindeer standing on the east side of the piazza.
Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar Square is a popular attraction all year round, but at Christmas it is especially evocative. It is dominated by the world's most famous Christmas tree, a gift from the people of Norway to the people of London in thanks for Britain's support during the second world war. This tradition has taken place every year since 1949, and its lighting signals the beginning of the countdown to Christmas in London.
